I love the exo-planets thing. I have joined the local science musuem for several talks on the subject. Fascinating. One researcher said that we have probably found a planet that has some sort of life on it, maybe not intelligent. But one of them probably has it, just proving it will be tough...then he went on how he thought it could be proven.

but I am really curious how religious people will respond to the news

the bulk of religious people who are not asshats won't give a frick. why would it matter?

the religious people who are annoying, are anti-gay marriage, hate sechs, are in general d-bags will be really annoying about this.

I predict we'll put a man on Mars before finding life elsewhere in the universe.

are you all really going to be so dishonest and say that the discovery of life elsewhere would not affect religion? just brush it aside?

Yes they would. That's how they have been taught.

I'll be interested, first, in whether the life is intelligent, and then whether they are more structured and higher functioning than we are.

How does NASA plan to accomplish this? They'll be lucky just to launch a probe to one of Jupiter's or Saturn's moons at the current pace.

Not with a probe, but maybe some type of non-natural signal. Just like we are sending out radio waves.

just seems like the Bible was pretty Earth centric...

Yeah, considering God made the sun, he moon, and the stars in a day, I'm guessing we curb stomp these Aliens.

What i'd like to happen: We all get a radio transmission from an Intelligent Alien that shares their incredible technology with us making the human race a wiser, intergalactic species in a matter of decades. We reach an unimaginable level of peace and tranquility amongst our species and others in the universe with the collective drive to explore the unknown void of space.

What Id really like NOT to happen: We run across a species of aliens to only find them to be the Flood/Zerg and we are boned beyond belief.

What will most likely happen:
We find a planet with our radio telescopes, etc, and rule that the the only way the variation of chemicals in the atmosphere are possible is through the existence of some biological process going on.

the researcher that talked to us says they are making advancements in being able to tell composition of atmospheres, and you can induce if plant life and/or animal life was present based off the composition of the atmosphere.

ETA: It was Hawkings

I have no idea how he arrived at that conclusion but Hawking is not the most reliable of sources, in my opinion. He did steal much of his black hole theory from others.

Pronounced "Hey-Zues". I'm pretty sure that all aliens are Mexican.

Don't see how it would .. I have never been "sold" (as you would put it) that God only created Earth

I didn't use "sold"...

I'm just thinking, that if I'm a religious person, say a Christian, and the Bible makes no mention or anything of intelligent life elsewhere, that it wouldn't make me a few question things..?

no?

I believe that intelligent life has existed elsewhere

I'm skeptical if it still exists

just think how old the universe is, and how small of a timeframe we have been around

entire worlds could have began and been destroyed and we could still have missed them by a BILLION years

I agree with you. I also believe that for a species to last long enough to master space travel to the point that would allow them to travel to other solar systems is very unlikely.

You could ask a chimp or a tribesman in the Amazon that question and get the answer you want, if you really thought that would settle it for you.

Can we being steering this discussion away from religion now? This happens every time. 1 page about the topic itself and then 13 pages of back and forth about how this or that will affect religion.

It gets annoying.
