Why? We’ve been told there wasn’t any reason to go back

Why are they orbiting so high? Apollo 8 was 70 miles above the moon.

Apollo 8 actually inserted into a lunar orbit. Artemis II will just do a flyby on a free return trajectory. So that’s part of the reason.

That said, even for a flyby on a free return trajectory, it’s very high compared to the Apollo missions. I believe the Apollo free return trajectories put them something like 160 miles above the Moon. So there must be some other mission requirement affecting it as well.

It’s for a moon base. No other reason. Rare earths up there. It’s the new oil.

Completely a guess, but I think they are keeping a lot of clearance as a safety factor. You know we are super, extremely, cautious compared to 1969.

1. In what world has NASA “fallen very far behind” China?

2. The US commercial sector exists primarily because of NASA / US government funding. This is especially true when it comes to heavy launch systems like Starship and the Super Heavy booster.

That said, there is grift involved with SLS.. but it’s Congress, not NASA. They’ve managed to keep SLS alive in spite of recommendations from multiple NASA administrators over the years to kill it, because a handful of senators really wanted to keep the jobs in their states.

I miss the NASA Gemini capsule piggy bank I bought in the 60's. Every time I watch To Kill a Mockingbird, I think Scout's ham costume looks like that piggy Bank. Old guys are selling their youth for $69.99 on EBay.

So the female pilot doesn’t crash. Doubt they’ll have a bible or Jim Lovell on board so better give that big wheel of cheese a wide berth.

No ones says we haven't flown around the moon or put shite.on the moon. Most that have an issue with the moon landing is the human aspect of the whole deal. All theyre doing is flying around the moon.
I bet that the china/russia teamup put humans on the actual moon before we do "again".

The mission should take 10 days from liftoff to splashdown

I remember when we could do it in 6 days back in the 60s.

Everything was easy back then before we knew it was hard.

Complaining that NASA is behind China while mocking funding is incoherent. China’s advantage is sustained state funding and centralized direction, and it didn’t happen by not funding their program.

It makes no sense to invoke China as a benchmark while simultaneously complaining about paying to change that dynamic.
