Nasa Engine

quote:

A NASA scientist has created a new concept for an engine that he says can move "close to the speed of light" – all without any moving parts or need for fuel.

quote:

"A new concept for in-space propulsion is proposed in which propellant is not ejected from the engine, but instead is captured to create a nearly infinite specific impulse," Burns wrote in the paper's abstract. "The engine accelerates ions confined in a loop to moderate relativistic speeds, and then varies their velocity to make slight changes to their mass. The engine then moves ions back and forth along the direction of travel to produce thrust. This in-space engine could be used for long-term satellite station-keeping without refueling."

quote:

The concept, which Burns admitted he is not sure is viable, takes inspiration from high-tech particle accelerators, similar to what is seen at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

Is this based of the discovery A few years back that EM radiation can produce thrust in space? (If I remember it was something along those those lines)

And of course, non-chemical, radiation driven propellant, is the future of space travel. Using Chemical propellant for any future long distance space travel is like burning peat to power New York City.

Is this how those new dyson hand dryers in bathrooms work?

Oh, how convenient timing. Right after the Navy pilot goes on Rogan to confirm the tic tac......

So it's basically a flux capacitor.

How does it stop once it gets where it is going?

Bunch of tax-sucking nerds, we need to shut that whole scam down.

Speeds up normally like this to 1/2 the distance to where you're going:

It Flips 180 using simple side thrusters:

Then slows down like this the last 1/2 of the trip. Its literally just accelerating in the Opposite direction at an equal rate to the initial vector:

If this works, that means we can also make missiles with this technology. Your move, Russia.

Ion engines aren't exactly new technology and you know as well as I do that gif has nothing to do with this engine.

This type of technology is a long term move. Small amounts of thrust over a very long period of time using fuel very very efficiently.

No need to use it for a missile unless you want to nuke Pluto in a timely manner.

you could intercept an ion drive missile with a blimp

This isn’t an ion engine.

Ion engine expels small amounts of ionized gas (typically Xenon)

This is an interial engine.

Massive ring assembly around the ship and they tweak the particle mass up going forward and down going back to generate a net forward movement. Only useful in absurdly long travel.

Care to explain? I haven’t heard/watched this episode.
