I think it has changed hands a few times.

I wish it would come back with just Metallica songs to download so Lars Ulrich could get all lathered up again.

Such a magical time the younger generations will never experience. Recording songs off radio to cassette, recording TV on VHS, making copies of tapes, etc. was never really frowned upon until the internet and technology caught up.

The music industry freak out was thing of beauty, and I say screw them all still. Greedy arse bastards.

Today you can just rip your music from Youtube or other sites, so I guess they never won.

They paid $207 million for a well known and easily recognized brand name, not the product.

Seems like most of the users in the metaversa would trend young, so there's a chance that very few of them actually know what Napster is.

Infinite Reality plans to create virtual 3D spaces that allow music fans to enjoy concerts or listening parties together, and let musicians or labels sell physical and virtual merchandise.

"When we think about clients who have audiences — influencers, creators — I think it's very important that they have a connected space that's around music and musical communities," Acunto said. "We just don't see anybody in the streaming space creating spaces for music."

Napster is the latest iconic technology brand from decades past to get a new life, following acquisitions and revivals in recent years of Kodak, Nokia and luxury audio brand McIntosh.

"I think there's no better name than Napster to disrupt," Acunto said.

quote:

Since 2016, Napster has been a music streaming service offering on-demand streaming of licensed tracks, currently for $11 per month. It's a small player in a world dominated by Spotify and Apple Music. In 2022, Napster was bought by blockchain company Algorand, whose investors brought in Vlassopulos.

Napster holds official licenses to stream millions of tracks, agreements that were attractive to Infinite Reality, which says that its version of Napster will "disrupt legally." And Algorand's background in blockchain technology was intriguing to Infinite Reality, which also develops Web3 technology, Acunto said.

Never forget my first download off that site. Couldn't believe such a thing was possible. Many a night after that going to bed letting downloads go only to wake up and find my slow arse download connection disconnected over night. For Gen X Napster was like the first time people got electricity in their home only this was getting music. The struggle of searching music stores , asking to borrow a cd , buying expensive CD's were over. Thank you napster

I get that, but the quality of music pre CD burning/streaming was a lot better than after they existed because there was more money to be made. If someone makes something that people enjoy, people should not be able to just take what was made without paying for it.

But ideally, artist would be able to be independent and not nee a record label. It should go directly to the artist.
