10 year old Supadave had no idea. But, you probably already knew it all at that age.

We did. So what we figured out was how to make a gooey flammable gel by melting styrofoam in a bucket of gas. We then made little thrower things to launch flaming balls of goo in the woods at anything that would burn. We were ready to take on the Russians with this firepower.

He made my brother and I pecan guns. Basically a 2" steel pipe with a pipe cap on one end, and he drilled a hole in the pipe cap so the firecracker fuse could go through. Put some wadding in the pipe and load it up with a pecan. It was our own pecan muzzleloaders. We'd have mud clot wars with the neighbors after a big rain. Neighbor had a tree house, we didn't. We started turning the tide of the wars when we brought out the old pecan guns and fire them at the neighbors. The pecans would explode on impact when it hit the side of that tree house. The mud flinging wars always ended shortly after the pecan guns came out, for some reason..

I don’t want to get political so no one please don’t this great thread, but it’s so sad that this piece of America is gone. That’s a all-around red blooded kind of Americana story that is never coming back. Your story is awesome and reminds me of the crap we did growing up. Our firecracker and pine cone wars were epic.

My dad had a gorilla costume. He would put it on and go knock on the windows of kids in my neighborhood. He would scare the shite out of us. He'd get shot doing that today.

Another thing is he made up a dance called the fleur di lis dance. When the Saints made a big play he'd have my brother and I do the dance around our coffee table while doing the Who Dat cheer. If we refused he would hit us with the 'bitch be good' stick and yell "bitch be good" at us.

Grandfather used to let me do some stuff that would be frowned upon now. He used to give us cigarettes to light firecrackers with. Bunch of 5-8 yr old kids running around with cigarettes in the yard. When we'd go behind a tree to take a puff and come out the other side green he would laugh.

We used to do the same thing. I know there is a picture of me and my cousins holding cigarettes crouched in that firecracker stance. Concentrating on the mission, but ready to haul arse when the fuse lights.

We dug my grandfather's grave together on Halloween of 1995.

Eta

No big story behind it. He was just that cheap back then. Think he saved about $50.

Crazy by today’s standards:
My brother and I used to run into the convenience store and buy a six pack of beer and cigarettes for my dad - we were like 7 & 8 years old - it was the late ‘80s and no big deal

My grandfather had an old Farm pond with a bunch of timber on one end. We were fishing it an he got his favorite lure/fly caught on one of the dead trees. He made me strip down to my skivies and swim out an retrieve his fly. I think he paid me a couple of bucks to do it. At 8 or 9 the thought of what was in that water terrified me. Funny thing is, I went on to study aquatic biology.

He was a physician and had Tuesdays off. Pretty frequently, I'd be at school on Tuesdays in the spring and they'd bring a note from the office saying I had a "Doctor's Appointment" at 1 pm. When I walked out, Dad would be there in our old K5 blazer so we could go fishing...

All of our dads has old varnish left over from some project 10 years before and it was gold. We’d dip big sticks in it and get that syrupy sludge twisted on it. Light on fire and run around dripping fire bombs on ant piles. Damn, that was so much fun.

Dammit I couldn't stop chuckling after reading that. Because when I read it, it was as if I could hear my dad's angry voice yelling about it.

When I was 15 my dad called me and asked me to check how much gas was in the motor home. I ran out and checked and it was full. He said he wanted me to drive it to Destin from Mongtomery. I told him that I did not have my drivers license yet. His reply was for me to take the back roads! So down US 331 I went!

My dad made me write a page long essay on Pete Marivich because I wasn’t paying attention to the documentary we were watching.
