Well 2 year prescription, the seat belt provision, and lowering the jury threshold but not to 5k. Stop insurance companies from setting rates based on occupation and credit score for starters and put a provision in any bill requiring rates to come down as reforms are out in place.

Lawsuits play a part in high rates but it is lazy and pandering to hang everything on it.

And because you let insurers charge blue collar workers and folks with bad credit more, you’re surprised rates are high in a largely rural, poor state where the two biggest industries are blue collar oilfield work and plant work?

Our car insurance rates are so high because: 1) the insurance commissioner allows it, 2) there are too many bad drivers, 3) the infrastructure is so bad it’s dangerous, 4) there are far too many dangerous drivers (including intoxicated drivers) on our roads.

Are you really going to leave out the #1 reason that our insurance rates or so high?

That it's become routine for poorer people in our state to sue when they are in a fender bender. It's a money making jackpot when in an accident.

I have a friend that was a paralegal for one of E Eric Guirrards partnering attorneys and he explained the entire process of what they would do to extort the most possible amount 'for' everyone that walked through their doors. It's truly pathetic and that was 15 years ago. There is a reason daytime tv and billboards in the poorer sides of town are bombarded with attorney ads.

Don't be afraid to state the real truth.

The lawyers get paid, and they pay the judges. What a corrupt bunch of crooks.

Genuine question because I do not know. Why did they kill the bills?

Nothing but wishful thinking and headlines to drum up support. The insurance commissioner admitted any claims of a reduction was pure speculation supported by nothing. This was a giveaway to the insurance companies.

Figures. Check to see how many of these legislators have donations from insurance companies/agents/directors etc and you’ll see.

Lower rates cut into profits and the insurance companies don’t want to be committed to lower rates. If the real goal was lower rates you would see a mix of tort reform and laws aimed at getting companies to lower rates.

This was a BS bill anyway that ended up favoring car insurance companies and making it harder to get your money from them when damages happened! It only states to lower rates because of the potential for less suits due to stricter rules.

The only way to lower automobile insurance premiums is to lower the amount that insurance companies are forced to pay out in judgments and settlements. The only way to lower insurance company payouts is to get a hold of and drastically change the litigation environment in Louisiana.

The vetoed bill started out as a good deal but went off the rails late with some bad amendments. My state rep tells me that there are some things working their way through in the special session which could make a big difference.

BTW, The whole argument about fixing insurance rates by using credit scores and other factors is a complete Red Herring. Removing those items as factors would simply cause people with good credit to pay more but the overall amount paid in premiums would stay the same. The only way to lower insurance premiums is to lower payouts. It is really a fairly simple math exercise
