First World = Capitalism
Second World = Communism
Third World = Neither

Russia and China were not allies but they were both Communists. Most of my youth was spent watching the Capitalist and the Communist try and convert everybody else to their side.

While I think you made this up, a friend of mine and I were driving home in high school around 11 on in Grosse Tete. No drinking. No drugs.

I see something up ahead standing by a mail box. Looks like a concrete statue of a dog standing on two legs, but with the chest build of a human and ornate white hair. Maybe 3ft tall..

When we get even with it, I look over, and it's in the center of the road right by my mirror. We drive by at maybe 50. Neither of us say a word for a few miles.

My buddy looks over and says, "I have to know if you saw that"

I admitted I did but had no fricking clue what it was. We drove another few miles then built up the courage to turn around. Get back by that house. No statue, nothing that looked like a statue. Nothing in the yard. No drag marks on the asphalt from someone moving a concrete statue.

To this day, I will not walk around our property outside at night without some sort of weapon. Gun, knife, big oak walking stick. Whatever.

I have no explanation for what it was. I can only tell you that until that night, I didn't think anything of going on a night walk all through the woods. I'd get miles from the house and wasn't ever worried.

That was 15 years ago. My buddy was an avid hunter, he will not go into the woods alone anymore.

There are things that go bump in the night. Things that lurk in the thin places. The dark places. There have always been monsters. Always been not-quite-rights on dark lonely nights.

And we can explain them away with our science. We can rationalize them as some natural phenomena.

But we can Never quite convince ourselves that they are just nonsense again once we’ve seen...something.

It’s that shape that was all too distinct in the shadows. It’s that thing on the road at night. The unnaturally long and lanky thing that you can just make wending through the trees on the shore of the river as you look from a barge in the middle of nowhere.

Because no matter how much we fill this world with our science and technology, there remains so much darkness. Places that humanity just can’t seem to stay for long.

Houses that no one ever feels right in. Places in the woods where the hair stands up on the back of your neck even during the day.

We’re not alone here. There are things that lurk in the realms just beyond our perception.
