what i'm trying to get him to do is an app FOR HIS SCHOOL. something that his school would use; not something random.

he was in the final 5 of logo redesign last year for the school (didnt win) so the school is open to innovative things like this.

he'd be the first person to build an app specifically for his school.

If the student handbook is online have him make an app with that and a map of each floor. It would help them get around and know what's up. Schools dig order and structure.

i'm trying to NOT recreate the website. what faculty thinks is cool isn't necessarily what the kids think is cool..or would actually use.

i'm leaning towards the cafeteria info..but whats the best way to do that? a notification each morning with the menu they get before they leave for school? so they can decide if they want to bring a lunch?

An interactive school map where you could see where you are and it updates as you move around the school? Add sharing to it and you have the Harry Potter map.

My kids' high school have a website where I can log in and see their grades at all times. Of course, it's only as accurate as how often the teachers update the grades.

What about on the app if it showed the student his grades at all times? This would have to assume that you have something like ours and the grades are always available.

He is. The app inventor site at MIT that Google supports gives you the power to quickly prototype and develop robust apps with almost no programming knowledge.

He's already coded a front end to a web based database he's reading and writing to and built mini apps around the accelerometer and location services.

It's amazing what you can do.

Make an app that rates public restrooms

Eta: Just saw it was only for his school. Make an app that rates teachers. How hard the class is, quality of teacher, etc. Basically ratemyprofessors for his school

i like the lunch menu idea but i wonder if anyone was as interested in the lunch menu as my friends and i were in high school.

we would hold up signs that said "CHICKEN PARM WEDNESDAY frick YEAH" during like 3rd period to each other getting excited as frick since one of us remembered. i highly doubt anyone else has ever cared that much about school lunch.

what if the app notified you in the morning on all sorts of shite going on that day or week? like you get on the app and it tells you what is for lunch, what sporting events or academic clubs have practices/meetings that day? school play try-outs start that day or it tells you that it's superhero day for spirit week. you can add your own notifications for your personal homework, tests, projects, activities, etc... as well.

will the school have to approve this? it will be supported by them, or no?

I know a dude who made an app that had your grades on it and it was extremely useful, and he made some nice cash off of it.

That was along the lines of what I was thinking. App that you add what classes you have and it would tell you what up coming assignments are due.

Obviously you'd have to have teacher involvement or have the student involvement

this is the best idea yet.

nah, its to show off. the high school he goes to is working hard to promote technology and he's been taking Photoshop and Flash classes so I'm sure they would love this as a prototype of what could be done..even if the data is faked or we have to manually feed the info.

if they opened a web service for all these activities, we could pull it in or possibly scrape it off the website.

i think the kicker is it has to notify you in the mornings (school starts at 6:55am) what's going on as you're getting ready..not so useful if you don't get the info until you're already at school.

he's in a normal public high school here in nashville..but they managed to pull off getting Brian Williams to speak at commencement back in May so the school is working hard to make a name for itself.

i'll keep y'all posted as this progresses.
