Sounds like a man who is capable of listening and following sound instructions.

I would have hired him to cut the grass and perhaps keep an eye on the property until it's rented.

Perhaps all he needs is a hand up to get back on track.

Doesn’t someone have to maintain residence for a minimum of 30 consecutive days or something to become a ‘squatter’? It’s not like someone can trespass or break in your house and call it theirs.

The problem becomes when he says he verbally says has been there for 30 days, and the owner doesn’t have readily available proof to counter that, it becomes a civilian matter and the dog and pony show begins

The time varies from state to state, but it's up to the local municipality to enforce it. If the squatter has been able to get mail sent to the location under their name, (especially if they're able to BS utilities) that can confuse the issue for law enforcement.

When you get into politics, like in California, it can get crazy.

Why the LEOs can't just contact the tax assessor's office to get clarification of who legally owns a home and go from there is beyond me (see: the recent kerfuffle with squatters here in BR).

Just did a little digging:

quote:

Art. 742. Acquisitive prescription.

The laws governing acquisitive prescription of immovable property apply to apparent servitudes. An apparent servitude may be acquired by peaceable and uninterrupted possession of the right for ten years in good faith and by just title; it may also be acquired by uninterrupted possession for thirty years without title or good faith.

Acts 1977, No. 514, §1.

LOL. How would you know he was capable of following instructions AND be able to hire him when a part of him following instructions was for him to be GONE?

Letting your personal property take on the look of abandoned property is such a great way to entice future renters.

I don't understand why you can't just cut the grass on one of the days you check on it. Why are you so lazy?

Because a stray dog isn't going to wander far in such a short time.
