We grew up in water practically and apparently he already has 3 certs in welding. While the underwater welding isn't safe, he brought it up and I supported it because he really loves welding. So I supported it and kept reminding him of his goal. The Navy isn't so much a goal or a want that he has, it is more of "idk what the hell else to do" so I am hesitant until more information is gathered.

Your brother may find that this gets him going in the right direction, but I would advise him that he join if he really wants to serve and is excited about the opportunities the Navy will provide him (job training, leadership opportunities, a chance to travel, etc.). I don't think I would advise him to join just because he's not happy with his life and wants to try something different.

Well for welding he's basically got 3 choices:
Hull Tech - support/shore based (safest)
Seabee - possibly deploy to combat zone
Diver - might not even make it through the school and end up hating the next 4 years
IMO the best path for him would be to go in as a Hull Tech and then try to get into dive school. That way if he fails out he'll at least have the HT job to fall back on and he'll still be welding.
Hull Tech - support/shore based (safest)

Just support your brother. I've known some serious piles of shite who joined the military and became some of the best people I know. It'll be good for him.

Coast Guard would be better for him if he is not so good in school, still part of the navy, but different if you know what I mean, will also be promoted faster then the navy.

I served 4 years in the Navy. I joined at 18 and was a smart kid who knew how to do just enough to get by. The Navy completely broke me of that habit. It pushed me to be a man who is reliable and driven to get the job done.
Below is a link to the minimum specs for the various navy ratings. it's a little hard to understand though so read carefully. The ASVAB has various subtests and each rating looks at a particular part to see if you qualify.
Your brother may not have done well in school but that does not mean he will do poorly on the ASVAB. He may be a "mechanically minded" guy who simply does not perform well on college preparatory testing.
For the HT rating, he will have to pass a minimum score in mechanical knowledge and reading comprehension.
Talk to a recruiter but do not drink the koolaid until after the ASVAB

Lol bro this is the military. Several of the frick ups I went to high school with are now in the Navy. Honestly if he has the balls to know that he wants to enlist then he'll be fine

If he is on a US Warship, there literally is no safer place to be in a battlefield. The food is warm and you have a bed to sleep in every night.

The Marines is a division of the Navy. And Navy Seals are the most bad arse people on the plant.

Highest Asvab scores required. Damage Controlman is our rate that welds and is also very slow in advancement opportunities.

Unless he is a pilot or a corpsman, he is probably statistically speaking safer in the Navy than he is working at a refinery.
