I don't know. He is a great kid, does't smoke or drink and does mission work. I think the military would eat him up or make a man out of him and teach him how to stand on his own.
I dont think he really has any other options, he still lives with the parents and goes part time at the trade school back home.

Not many Navy ships are sunk these days.

He could be trained as an underwater welder, do his four years, keep travelling the world afterwards and make some serious bank in the process.

Don't give up on him, yet. He's still a kid. I had no clue when I was 20. In fact, I was training to be a machinist out of HS. It went nowhere.

If he's interested in staying with welding tell him he wants to be a Hull Technician.
For the most part. If he wants to be an HT he'll probably be stationed on a support ship like a tender or at a shore facility.
Not how the Navy works. If he scores low, it will eliminate him from certain rates. I knew a lot of HTs and some of them were pretty dumb. It doesn't take a genius to weld.
And stupidity doesn't mean you'll get sent into harms way. It just means you're limited in what jobs are open to you. The worst case scenario... he'll end up being a cook.

he could join the Coast Guard and chase the drug runners. I.E. plenty of free smokes.

This is what I've told him from day 1 when he decided to do welding. Underwater welding and travel the world doing it.

Yes, he is completely lost. I will support him in any decision he makes. But, I want him to have knowledge about things before he makes a decision.

Look... if he wants safety then he needs to ask about the Hull Technician rating. If he wants something more dangerous then he'll have to complete dive training to do anything like underwater welding... or he can go Seabee and he'll probably end up in a combat zone at some point.

And if he doesn't make it then the navy will shite him out wherever they need a warm body. If he doesn't successfully complete dive school then they will put him wherever they want to put him... and he likely won't have much choice in the matter.
They will look at his scores to see which rates he can enter. Then they will see which of those rates are undermanned and that's where he's going.

It's not a walk in the park but will provide some stability and give him some purpose and when he decides to get out he will be better off

seems like a good opportunity for him to see if he has a pair, doesn't sound like he's got a whole lot of choices at this point anyhow, to OP, best of luck

Yeah... I'm just pointing something out for all the people saying "be an underwater welder in the navy". It's not that easy.
I hope for his sake he's comfortable in and under the water. If not, I recommend he inquire about the HT rating.
