I only knew my maternal grandfather and we lived 30 yds from him in rural St Martin parish. He was 5th grade educated and did not learn to speak English until he began having grandchildren. He and my grandmother lived on 30 acres of land and lived almost entirely on the meat from the livestock they raised and fruits and vegetables that they grew. He would wake up early as a young man to do whatever chores needed to be done at the house, then he would go to work for other farmers to work their fields to earn money. He was a small man, and to hear the stories about the physically demanding work he had to do to make a living it’s amazing that he lived to be 91. He never missed a Sunday mass and was the kindest person I’ve ever known. He only understood the rules of and loved the game of baseball, but he came to every college home football game I played in, and I was only a punter, lol. He used to sit in his lawn chair under his carport and watch me practice punting in the pasture before I walked on and would comment on every kick. Coincidentally, I dreamed about him last night riding with me to go to a high school softball game to watch me coach and I saw his face clearly in the dream. I miss him all the time, and my only regret is that I am not nearly as good a person as he would have wanted me to be.

I listened to a podcast recently and host said humans are "devolving." Our ancestors were stronger, healthier, better and happier than us, in spite of being much poorer and having little in material goods and few modern conveniences.

CAD, all that crap you wrote is weak sauce compared to men that I know. Basically you are entitled, weak, and soft if you think what you wrote about your granddad was hard core.

You call him better than anyone else and not even close with this BS story? I call him a lazy and unremarkable.

Intelligence is dropping across the globe. People have stopped taking care of their own problems and have lost the ability to problem solve.

Good stuff, except the part about comparing him to others alive.

My 83 yo neighbor who just spent 10 hours a day this past two weeks cutting/putting up hay says hi. He's a beast who still takes time to help his fam and neighbors.

There's still lots of remarkable people still alive and we need to take the time to cherish them.

In all honesty though, one thing I will always miss in life was not really knowing either of my grandfathers. My paternal one was estranged from the family long before I was born, so I never knew him at all (I may have met him once in my life). My maternal one died when I was like 4 or so, so I don't have very many memories of him and we certainly weren't close at all. I've always felt like I missed out on some good times and lessons by not having grandfathers in my life. Makes me sad sometimes.

I feel for you brother.

My grandpa stories are the ones I enjoy telling the most. Imagine a comical mix of Red Forman and Archie Bunker.

I never heard him say "I love you" to anyone because he probably didn't, but I still miss him. Grumpy old cuss.

My granddad was better than anyone currently living and its not even close at 75 when i would stay for a week with them in the summer my granddad would make fun of me for eating 'late breakfast' at 6am when i woke up. he'd already eaten breakfast and tossed the cold hungry jack biscuits to the squirrels.

My grandfather was better. He prioritized feeding his grandchildren. Squirrels could fricking suck it.
