it depends where the DG is located. I have seen some that are what you describe but they are pretty nice in NC.

Holy crap..this place is the trashiest store I've ever been in.

If this is true then I envy you. Dollar General is high end compared to some places I've been that are off the trash charts.

To most of the world a Dollar General is luxury.

That’s why we want to keep most of the world out of this country so we don’t end up with more Dollar Generals

I tend to avoid them as well as conventional Wal-Mart stores.
It has a lot to do with location.
There's a DG near my house that's clean, well stocked and pretty large for a DG.

In order of trashiness, most to least

1) Family Dollar - Hoodrat Dollar General
2) Dollar General - White trash Family Dollar
3) Dollar Tree - Some of the above+normal people buying cheap greeting cards and wrapping paper

I really don’t care one way or the other but I find it interesting that can be driving in the absolute middle of nowhere and Shazam... a Dollar General appears out of nowhere.

The food is the same as Walmart

This is 100% false. Now there are still a few shitty Wal-Marts that don't have a full grocery. But I think I've been in one in the past decade (between Savannah and Tybee Island).

The WM in Decatur, GA actually has a kick arse selection of good, healthy foods (see my list on HFB).

They have more than double the amount of stores as Walmart. Tons in rural areas and most cities of a somewhat decent size will have several.

They have a bunch of brand new ones around where I live. I love that place. When you are in a hurry and just need a few things you don’t have to waste a bunch of time in a big box store. No you can’t get everything you need but when you need some t.p., toothpaste and dishwater detergent you can be in and out in 5 minutes. That walk to the front door is short too.

I did a taste test with choice ribeye from Whole Foods, Earth Fare (prime), Costco, Aldi, Publix, and WM (extra thick cut). Walmart won and is consistently the best of those.

Costco sometimes ties, and their prime looks great (haven't had their prime ribeye), but Wal-Mart still wins. I may be eating sandhill crane for all I know, but it's good.

The shelf stable food is the same brands as Walmart. One off Walmart stores in nicer areas are nowhere near the norm.

I called on 13 rural market dollar generals and 3 family dollars for 2 years. It’s all the same shite, just a smaller store and obviously a limited refrigerated set.
