3x surge after a game doenst seem like manipulation though, it seems reasonable

They could have just turned their devices off and waited until it went up? I beat the crowd, I moved fast after that pic

So when I left the stadium I immediately got on the app to find a car and I was quickly connected to a guy at no surge pricing. About a minute later it says my trip has been cancelled. So I re do the search this time with 2X surge and I connect with a woman and a minute later she cancels! So I search again with a 3X surge and the original guy connects with me and finally picks me up. My total ended up being 90+ dollars. So I wrote an email to Uber about how their drivers were purposely canceling rides to make the price go higher and they refunded me the difference between the regular and the surge which I thought was great customer service.

I understand that any business can get a few bad apples or have ppl taking advantage or having tech problems, etc, it is how they respond when complaints are made. That is the good thing about Uber is that they will work with you to make sure that you are satisfied. Yellow cab would have just made you wait until 3:30AM and then still charged you more on gameday and expect a tip.

If the accusation that drivers are manipulating pricing is true, this is a HUGE problem for the system.

Drivers are in no control of pricing whatsoever.

Had a pretty good experience Friday night with Uber in BR. Normal pricing when we went out at about 8:30, and 4x surge pricing going back to the place we were staying at 3:00am. But the most important thing is we got picked up on time and the drivers/vehicles were nice.

Friday night it was 4.25x.

I've had some good experiences with Uber, but you definitely have to see it for what it is.. a luxury item. When you're desperate enough to get home that you'll pay out the arse, it is nice to have. On "regular" nights, you're getting a steal.

The ride situations have only gotten tougher for me lately, so I stayed relatively sober all weekend. Friday, I refused to pay 4+x, so I called Yellow Cab. They told me 30m-1hr (no biggie, I called much earlier than I was really ready for). Waited an hour and decided frick it, I'll drive. Called to cancel and they didn't even have me in the system. A cab was never coming.

I've gotten to the point where I don't even want to go do anything on busy nights because I don't want to be stuck outside waiting on a ride.

ETA: And I was a huge YC fan, but that's because we used it enough to have cabbies who recognized the name. That's not the case anymore, so it is much harder.

uber connects the driver and customer. each has a grace period to cancel the ride for whatever reason.

i dont think anyone can answer your question as to why the driver cancelled unless they just so happen to be the driver.

The first guy I connected with who dropped me is the guy who I ended up riding with 5 minutes later.

i know. you said that already. but you assumed he dropped you because it was initially regular pricing and he only picked you up because it was 3x. I'm pretty sure that's a bad assumption.

I've never heard of surge pricing honestly. I don't use uber often outside of large cities though, so that could be it. I've probably used it 50+ times in total in San Fran, Miami, NYC and Chicago without a problem. I had to read up on the pricing system (basically what i figured from what you were saying).

Interesting to me

every city has surge pricing. even the ones you listed. you just didnt use the service when surge pricing was in effect.

i've yet to use it either in BR. but i dont use it on gameday weekends.

For you guys worried about drivers manipulating the system through cancellation, there are already safeguards in place...first off drivers get dinged for cancellations, secondly, in order for the surge to increase drivers need to be off the grid(going to a pickup or driving people to their destination)...accepting rides and cancelling does not increase surge pricing.

Lastly, if drivers wanted to wait for higher surges, they don't have to accept requests...it doesn't make sense for them to accept and then cancel because there is zero benefit and it only hurts them...more than likely they could not get to you because highland is a monster clusterfrick...it is literally the worst road to be on when contraflow starts.

You said you were near the stadium when you made your first request, Highland and Parker is literally nowhere near the stadium

I think uber is a great idea and probably a good service. I can't say for sure because I have never used them.

I did look up a cab ride once from the French quarter to mid city and it was $23 - $26, so instead I walked down the road and hopped in a cab for $15 with no trouble. It is good having the option between the two.

the driver probably just didnt think he could get to him initially. that's much more plausible of an explanation then he was trying to manipulate a system he cant manipulate (and I'm sure he knows that).
