I thought this was going to be a cool and trashy story, not a painfully detailed explanation of how Walmart’s use self checkouts
Apparently the OP doesn’t go to Home Depot or CVS. Both are just about 100% full self checkout.

Home Depot by me still has more cashiers than self-checkouts.
CVS by me had no self-checkouts last time I went - maybe 6 months ago

Really? My Home Depot doesn’t have any cashiers except in the garden dept. Self check out has a few helpers but you’re pretty much on your own
Same with CVS, they may have 1 cashier in the front and one in the Pharmacy but there’s 3 self check out kiosk which is nice

You do know it costs under $100 a year to get groceries delivered straight to your doorstep from Walmart.

I live walking distance to CVS so go probably more than average just because I’m lazy. Haha. The self checkouts are new. But I like them.
And yah it’s pretty much 100%. They direct you to them and only physically check you out if the line is long or if you request it to use cash/coupons/etc

The security Guard even comes over and helps out if something gets jammed up. They also have the little tool that removes the deal off liquor bottles. CVS self checkout is a GameChanger.

Amazon Go stores are much better. Scan your phone as you walk in, put your stuff in bags, and walk out. No scanning of any kind required. They have them in several cities now.
They charge your items to a card in your app. No employee needed unless you buy alcohol, which requires an ID check.

I shop at local grocery store. In St George I shop at Colandros. No EBT allowed and almost every register is open during peak hours.
If you can find an non EBT store I can guarantee you a better shopping experience.

I know a woman who works a Walmart self-checkout and the theft is through the roof.
You can't tell me they aren't stealing more than the wages of a checker per hour. So why then?

Fairly simple to operate.
If you have fresh fruit or vegetables just look up the code or most vegetables have a code sticker on them.
It is not Wal-Marts fault they don’t make them Karen proof.

I always buy something that requires ID and have to stand there and wait for the one person to check IDs at all the other self checkouts.

Rodman does the best self checkout comedy bit.

I'd rather 12 operational self-checkouts,
Costco converted about 1/3 of theirs to self checkout. I fricken love it. I 100% always use self checkout if offered i will actually drive past a store to go a few blocks farther because they have self checkout.

It has to be. Just this weekend, I bought some ‘Tomatoes on the vine’ amd then got to the bottom of my buggy and realized one of the tomatoes had fallen off the vine. I rung up the single tomato on the vine and the rest of my various produce. I could have EASILY stolen it, but I’d be terrified walking out the door.
20 year old me would have most likely stole it, but 44 year old me is a pus. I get overly dramatic when putting my cell phone back in my pocket so I don’t look like I’m shoplifting. Hold it up like a casino blackjack dealer (exaggerating, I do not.)
But with mandatory mask, self checkout has to be a severe loss of ‘shrinkage’.

I can’t help but think others aren’t as terrified as me and use that as an opportunity. I’m not trying to promote myself here as 20 year old me would have most likely stole it, but 44 year old me is a pus. Do you have a formal education?

I guess I’m a chump but I don’t steal anything at self checkout. Seems rude.

Yes. Scary, huh?

We use the Scan and go app at Sams and laugh at all the people in line as we walk right around them in the checkout line. Wal Mart has it to but I ain't paying the monthly fee for it.

I never use self checkout, I always think about how this is an attempt by stores to take away another person's job. I understand that some cashiers (especially at the few times I go to a Walmart!) have zero personality and appear to disdain you, but other times you have cheerful people that love conversing!
