My Experience with an all self-checkout Walmart Grocery

The Walmart Grocery (trashy, yes) by our house had previously had 6 cashier registers (of which, maybe 3 at most were ever open) and 4 self-check stands (or which, at least 1 was always broken, and all of them were turned off for the last 2 hours the store was open).
Last Sunday (8 days ago), the store closed early, and opened late the next day. During that overnight, the entire cashier area was revamped.
All cashier stands, and all current self-check out stands were removed. In it's place: 12 brand-new self-checkouts (scan and go)... and no cashier stands.
The scan and go machines were arranged in two parallel lines of 6 and 5, with a 12th on the end. The lines are parallel to the front of the store. There is a single entry point to the queue, and a line develops from there. There was a worker at the front of the queue, guiding shoppers to an open machine. In addition, there was an employee at a podium, in the middle of all of this, keeping an eye on things, and a third employee was kinda walking around seeing if anyone needed help.
The customer service desk was also open, and it appeared to be staffed and if you need an actual cashier, you could go to that line.
The neighborhood FB group Karens were all up in arms about this over the last week, but I went yesterday, and it seemed to work well. I'd rather 12 operational self-checkouts, as opposed to a couple of rude cashiers and broken self-checkouts.
Of course, I only go inside this store if I need a few things. Otherwise, I do the online order and pick-up thing.
The future is here, and $15 an hour min wages will just cause it to spread faster.

I almost always use the self checkout at the Neighborhood Walmart.

I love self check out. Hate making small talk with a cashier

I love self-checkout. I'm a master at it. I organize all my stuff, scan it, bag it, pay by card, done. I always lol when I see people standing in long-arse lines, while self-checkout is wide open.

Yep. Most jobs making less then $15 are the first to be replaced by automation.

So the only place you could purchase alcohol or tobacco was at the customer service counter? That seems like a terrible idea.

In before geriatrics bitch that "the store should pay me for doing their job".

Always self-checkout at Wal-Mart and Kroger but rarely at H-E-B.
My biggest problem with the self-checkout is the machine throwing a fit if it doesn't pick up on something being placed into a bag. Seems to happen every time at Wal-Mart.

Any time I go somewhere with no self checkout and they start that small talk shite, I just give them a cold stare and say nothing

I always peel the stickers off bananas and put them on electronics and furniture
You gotta be looking for deals in this economy

I'll go to self checkout even if there is no line for a cashier

I like ones at the neighborhood Walmart by me.
They have the self checkouts that are just one per aisle with the conveyer belt. So it's like a normal check out line without a dumb kid working it or some slow as frick old lady that can barely read the screen.

This.
I am convinced that at this point, I am over-qualified to be an actual cashier

Fast food places using Covid as an excuse to close inside dining. Limiting to drive-thru means less employees and less being forced to pay $15/hour.
These people demanding arbitrary minimum wages are so shortsighted.
