I'm curious about this one, though, and how it holds up in the long run. Not the mugged or murdered part, but the bikes themselves.
Yeah, I do wonder about the economic feasibility in the long run. They seem like really sturdy well built bikes. I see them around quite a bit around town and the ones in and around City Park def. seems to be getting used pretty well.

I live down the street from you on Henry Clay between Constance and Laural and feel safest I’ve ever felt in the city. IMO, west riverside is the least sketchiest part of the city. Besides those shitty apartments on Tchop between Jefferson and State, this area is a gem. Like I said before, my car has never been broken into and I’ve necer been robbed the 15 years I’ve been living here.

Are we possibly near a point where the gentrification may accelerate enough to push more of the section 8 folks out of central city and the last bad areas down by St Claude/Broad St?

The mixed income housing in central city is preventing any revitalization imo. Oretha Haley Castle is really nice with some excellent eateries but the area around it is still not that great.

One of the things talked about by Cantrell when she was campaigning was improving public transit... specifically bus transportation from the East. Taking out the gangbangers, a lot of people who live in Central City work in the tourism industry downtown - cleaning tables, cleaning hotel rooms, maintenance, etc.
Eventually higher prices of gentrification will come towards central city - as the Warehouse District fills up. I can see a lot of that Section 8 folk ending up in the East. You would end up with a giant lower class "ghetto" in the east (not that different than today... just more people).
By the way... it's really a shame what the East has become. It had all the potential to become that middle class area inside Orleans Parish. Tons of relatively cheap land also meant you could have a significant amount of industry / professional businesses out there - companies that didn't want to locate downtown. People are going to make fun of me for this, but it could have been our Katy, our Woodlands, etc. But it was never properly managed, and the oil bust did it in.

Hey that is great. I'm back on NS now and fortunately I don't have to care about that crap anymore.

I've lived in the city for 17 years...ive never been robbed or shot either, but I have had my truck stolen, found a different truck on cinder blocks one morning, my shed was broken into and they stole my lawn mower, weed-eater and blower...I've also had my truck broken into once for the radar detector.
Other than that, a crazy arse bitch of a neighbor slashed my tires one night because I parked my truck so close to her rear bumper she couldn't get out to go to work.

My day in the city of New Orleans
This needs a sticky!

Well said. Anyone who lives here and can’t/refuses to admit that living in Orleans parish there are sacrifices (personal and financial) to be made and precautions to be taken on a daily basis is delusional.

look another plant worker from Watson giving the OT his two cents on NOLA.
LOL. Based on my post, I am clearly far more familiar with New Orleans than you are. Lived in or around it almost my whole life. Lived in or been to enough other places to know how much of a shithole it is and how it is getting worse. Some great people there, but most of them have moved to the burbs, Northshore, BR, or other states.
If you can contradict one assertion in my post, please try.
Every social and economic metric that relates to longterm improvement is negative per New Orleans. The city's leaders and the current residents have done everything in their power to ensure continued decline. A city that was once a major global commercial center is fast becoming Savannah, Georgia. I love visiting Savannah, but would never consider living there.
Everything in my previous post is true. If you don't believe it, it is proof positive that you have no knowledge of New Orleans whatsoever. I love New Orleans, which is why I can be honest with myself about its utter and complete failure to turn around when given the chance.
By the way, 100 nolier-than-thou transplants and transients aren't worth one hair on the butt of one plant worker from Watson.

a yard for the kiddos and more house for the price, you can't go wrong with that. Do you work on the north shore or south shore.

That's every city and town in America, though.
There is no utopia.

I go to New Orleans.. 2, 3... 4 times a year and I have never felt "unsafe".

What do you consider increasing housing price index?
LINK
What about increasing per capital personal income?
LINK
What about a decreasing unemployment rate?

Now, there are some negatives, of course. But once again... blanket statements like...

is absolutely full of crap.
Research. You should try it.

And we could dig up stats about th increases in tourism, condo units built in the last 10 years, hotels being built, major renovations happening all over the city.
Nola has a lot of problems, but the baws who show up in every thread to call it a shithole are idiots.
