Best choice in this scenario is a K frame or L frame revolver in .357 magnum. She can train with .38 special loads and tame recoil tremendously
This was my immediate thought as well. Avoid the fancy scandium, etc. lightweight frames. Get one that’s stainless to mitigate recoil and make training more user friendly. I’d recommend at least a 4” if it’s going to be solely a home defense option and not carried. Also, there are good self defense choices in 38 if 357 is too harsh. Revolvers are ultra reliable and a solid used one can be had for a really great price. Good luck.
ETA: If a 380 is the preference the new S&W Bodyguard 2 has amazingly light recoil for such a tiny pistol with a snappy round. And capacity is 10-12 or 13, depending on magazine.

Tell her to move somewhere that votes 75% red and she'll be safe enough to not have to worry about needing a gun.
On second thought, let her and her voting habits stay where she's at
I'd go pistol over shotgun, especially if she has no prior firearm experience. If she ever had to use it, I think a handgun would be a lot easier to handle than a long gun for someone inexperienced and in a moment of fear. Probably 380 or 9mm. Tell her to go to a gun shop that has an indoor range. They'll probably have some models she can try out before she buys and can give her some hands on lessons with the basics.
But she needs to make several range trips to practice and get comfortable with it. And then continue visiting the range every so often to stay in practice.
ETA: I can't stress this enough....but if she has kids in the house, make sure that gun is locked up where its inaccessible to the kids. There's plenty of small safes that'll fit inside a nightstand drawer and have biometric or keypad locks that'll still allow for quick access in a moment of need, while keeping the gun safe from kids getting to it.

I told her to buy a semi-automatic youth model 20 gauge shotgun. My reasoning is that the size would be easier for a woman to handle and it would not kick too badly. Also it would be easier to just pull the trigger when she wants to fire it without having to pump out the spent shell.

S&W 500 should do the trick.

I’m hoping to not have to shoot someone, Mr Hardass. The pump is to scare a perp off. But tell me about all the home invaders you’ve shot.
I would rather have an extra shell in it than to hear that sound.
Its like tv shows where they chamber a round before doing something.

Because that sound..is scary
People complicate this way too much though, get her a revolver, I doubt she is going to the range to practice all the time. She needs something simple thats not going to malfunction in the big moment

I was thinking 10/22 also, easy to shoot, light, short and it won’t scare her.

Go with a sub compact 9mm or .380 with a laser sight.
To gun haters, a semi-auto may very well be too confusing to them.
My wife is no gun hater but she's not much of a shooter ether so I have two revolvers for her to choose from.
I had a .380 with a laser for her but fumbling around trying to find the laser switch might get her in trouble.

She probably married someone afraid to carry a pocket knife, let alone own a gun.

Get her a SBR in 300 blackout with a suppressor and watch her become a real American before your eyes.

IF you really think that arming a "whacked-out screaming liberal" is necessary, your choice in a firearm is not bad. But even this simple system requires skilled training.
So who will train such a person?

Tell her she’ll shoot her eye out and get her a taser.

liberal who told her husband she never wanted a gun
Worked at a company where we used to build AR-15s in the lab and went to the range all the time, hog hunting, pheasant/quail, and skeet tourney sponsored by our bank.
We had two women and a sales guy from CA that were what you described what your daughter is. We took them to the range one time and within a month they all owned a gun.
A pump shotgun would be my choice, she will not be shooting at range and you don't have to be precise to hit something, plus the sound of racking it will scare the shite out of a lot of people.
Make sure you teach her and her husband how to use and store it properly though.
