There are places you can store a boat or RV so it’s not in your driveway.
Businesses also use them instead of leasing another building.
And of course people have them loaded with crap too.

My father had 3 units to store old shite from a business for many years(think 7ish) He asked me clean them out on day. All single stack plenty of roomin each. Could have fit in one but nothing was of value.
Told him the facility should name the row of units in his name. I don't know why he kept paying.

Now see post about how small the average American’s retirement savings account balance is.
Relationship to stuff / overabundance of self storage capacity in our consumerism lifestyles?
Not no.

If it’s climate controlled you can hide out there from the old lady

What demand drives the construction of these places?

Take a look at the massive cargo carriers coming into the port of Long Beach. Every one of those metal boxes is filled with junk that people don't know that they don't need. So they buy decorations for Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Saint Patricks day, dinnerware for special occasions, clothes they don't need or won't fit into, furniture that is the wrong color for the room, and on and on.
They aren't going to store it in their two bedroom house and be reminded of the foolishness of the purchase. Besides they haven't paid off their credit card bill that includes it.
So easy just to store it until they move to the place they have in their dreams but not in their budget.

Storage facilities, dollar stores, and vape shops seem to be the only new businesses popping up where I live.

It’s great money, opened one in northwest Houston for boats/RV’s and tractor trailers. Minimal overhead. But it’s in an industrial not residential area

People with stuff they don’t need.
Self storage places are cash printers they make a shite ton of money.

People tired of using their garages as a glorified storage unit and their ole lady is pressuring em to do it
Actually most people have full garages and full storage units
People have way too much shite

I don’t get these places. What kind of stuff do I not love enough to keep in my house but love so much I’m willing to pay every month to keep it? And at what point is it cheaper to sell the stuff now and buy it again later if you want it?

We cleaned out a customers who recently died.
Nothing valuable in it. He spent over 10k over 4 years on the place. Everything he had in there was out dated, not worth more than 25-50 dollars. Except for some equipment but that wasnt worth much more.
Its sad.
That was the stuff he thought he could still use.
He just drank and took pills the last 3 years of his life.
A lot of people could have used a lot of the things he had as well. He just let them rot.

Don't get me started. The furniture in ours isn't worth the material it's made out of. It's shite we will never use again but it's sentimental and damn near breaks when you move it, but WE can't part with it. One run to the dump sure would be cathartic instead of the $79.99 monthly fee.

Consumerism. People buy way more stuff than they really need.

The flatfoots at the IRS ain’t dummies. They set up cameras to measure traffic in/out and utilities to get metrics.
Have not heard of cameras but if you are ever audited, they will request your water bills and match the meter readings to your deposits. That is how they busted a buddy of mine.

A guy I hunt with has the trifecta. He builds car washes, storage facilities and RV sites.
After he builds 3-4 of one of them he sells them to a private equity firm. Has probably built 30 car washes in 10 different cities.
The RV sites are new to him but the 2 he built are well on their way to paying themselves off (after 3 years). Location is important but ground elevation is more important, you can lose your arse doing a lot of prebuild dirt work.

I have several friends who are small construction contractors. They use these places to store their equipment that they can't keep at their homes.
Their pickup trucks are their offices.
