The whole thing is pretty sad. Being that she was younger, but kinda around my age, I looked her up.

What I learned:

She had actually lost 200+lbs prior to her passing.
She was married (to a woman) for 6 years prior to passing.
She had 200,000+ social media followers.
In a post a couple of months ago, she talks about having an eating disorder… which if you kinda read between the lines, gives the impression that she went from overeating to anorexia or bulimia.

It’s depressing to watch a depressed person go further down. But as several posters have stated, other people have to make it possible for her to continue her self destructive behavior.

lots of jokes, but it really is sad. 30 is so young, and her quality of life was awful im sure.

I have a feeling that a lot of childhood obesity (that persists into adulthood) is tied to the over-structuring of childhood playtime.

Schools scaled back PE to put more emphasis on academics.

Parents started "helicoptering" over their children, driving them to their friends' houses rather than giving their children bikes to take themselves to their friends houses.

Keeping kids indoors rather than encouraging them to go outside.

As the weight becomes harder and harder to get off, the children's self-image and self-esteem take a nosedive. They develop depressive symptoms, which only exacerbate their need to eat comfort food. And regretful parents begin enabling their children as a means of dealing with their own trauma over their poor parenting.

It's far more tied to diet.

And if you watch that video, she grew up constantly berated and abused by her father and mother basically abandoned her and sister. Food was her solace.

I knew a guy who got the bypass surgery, but his overweight wife wasn't supportive, so he put the weight back on, plus some.

A loving family would have never let her get to this point. I'm betting they played their role in her deathly obesity. She couldn't do stuff for herself and so these "loving" family members got the food for her.

Do you blame families for drug addicts/ deaths of family members? She was an adult & didn't need family to get her food..

Sad, but at least she's at peace.

There was junk food in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Of course there was, but it comprised far less of the average American’s diet than it does today.

I’m in my 30s, and I know many people my age who don’t cook. At all. Ever. Instead they prefer to eat out and do Uber Eats. Recipe for disaster.

The problem I have always had with these big people is the enablers. She is FAR too large to be going to McDs on her own. Stop bringing the crap and bring salads and water. The weight will magically start falling off.

Every 600lb person was a 500lb person first. Every 500lb person was 400lb person first.

I’ve scanned a patient for cardiac clearance who was potentially going on this show a few years ago. The mental aspect of how they use food to cope with other stressors is very interesting. There’s so much going on with these patients and many of them have enablers who won’t do the difficult things it requires to help their loved ones. The patient was very nice and her attitude was one of desperation and it seemed she knew she would die if she continued to live the way she was. There’s no excuse for being 400 pounds overweight but it did give me some perspective on how it can spiral out of control. These patients need the help of a therapist just as much as an MD to really get to the source and know what triggers and behaviors to avoid along with the benefit of actually talking to someone who can actually help them if they commit to being helped.

When people are this big they’re typically not able to get food on their own. If her family was still bringing her bad food while she was immobile they’re certainly enabling.

All that said, I’ve only watched a handful of these shows and it seems almost every single one went through some awful trauma as a kid in the form of abuse (and sometimes sexual abuse). I could absolutely see some of these people becoming addicted to food in the absence of healthy coping mechanisms for their trauma. I think on one of the shows I watched the 600 lb person admitted to eating so much when younger so that they’d be “too fat to be attractive” to their abuser.

So yeah, frick some of these families for not trying to help these people find a therapist or healthier coping mechanisms for their trauma response.
