This.

And if you still carry him on your insurance, the answer is an emphatic “no”.

Let him get one.

Track-day it. RideSmart in Texas is a combination riding school and track day outfit that goes to tracks all over the SW. I’m sure there are others wherever you are.

I’ve done track days at COTA and Barber, as well as several local tracks. Ride as fast as you want without fear of cops, gravel in a corner, or Trudy on her cell phone in her new Tahoe.

I believe it.
Had vehicle next to me get hit at light yesterday.
Probably 20 mph. Van hit it from back.

If that was motorcycle, could have been a bad scene.

There's just no protection.

Rode a motorcycle for years. As my only vehicle for a couple of them. I don’t know if I’d ever ride again. That being said, I told my son he can ride one if he can build one.

Be firm. If you have any control don’t let him. A good friend of mine was hit by a car in a suburban neighborhood 25 mph. Nice day. He was nearly killed. He got the bug at 50 years old. He’s lucky to be alive.

Do all you can to talk him out of it / change his mind.

Take him on a long drive around town and have him just look at drivers, see how many people are on their phone, eating, flicking their bean, just straight not laying any attention.

All it takes is for him to cross one of their paths and a little bad luck and he doesn’t see his 19th birthday.

The bad news is generally 18 year old boys find a way to do what they really want to do. Even if it means he has to go behind your back / or just get it anyway and piss you off.

This!

I think of it as the "lesser flea" school of thought. The bigger the vehicle or the higher number of wheels, it is the lesser flea that is ignored and disrespected.

My old man had an Indian in the 30's and 40's so I love American made metal. (no rice burners or European crotch rockets for me).

First step is your State police. They usually have the best motorcycle school or can direct you to who is. This is the money best spent keeping your kid alive.

Second step is real leather boots (with the extra thick shoe leather), a full face helmet, and a real set of leathers. No matter how well they ride, they will have at least one contact with asphalt or gravel and good thick leather will mean your kids skin is still there

I liked to ride in groups as a pack of lesser fleas got more respect on the road

Soft arse menfolk nowadays. have to laugh at all these organ donor responses. Not everybody dies that rides a motorcycle. I would at least tell him there is a good chance his 18yo male brain may convince him to twist the throttle. He must avoid that. Oh, and get him to register for a riding class. Best thing he could do.

We just had a guy at our work killed on a motorcycle. Tragic. He used it as a daily driver in Houston but happened while he was on vacation. Tell him you’re exercising your parental right of veto!

Got my first bike at 9 yrs old. Had one all through college and have one still. I stay off the roads for the most part now, forestry roads and trails only.

People are too distracted these days. It's just not worth it anymore for me. Too many close calls.

Get the kid a Dual Sport, and hit some trails. Let him build some skills for a few years before he's up against the Altimas and Corolas and F-250s. Fit him out with the equipment for the crash, not the ride.

Seems like he has all sorts of control if the kid is going to school with a car and housing and insurance and potentially a motorcycle on 1800 a month

I’m guessing dad is covering a lot in this scenario

There's also a reason 18 year olds are cannon fodder. Young, fearless, impulsive.

Cerebral cortex isn't fully developed until 25.

He should learn to ride dirt first. It will make him a better rider than 80% of other guys on the road and how to really handle a bike when he needs to. A dual sport like a drz 400 would be a good start, they're pretty mellow bikes.
