My post above yours explains why I think it should still be taught.

But to this specific point, I think knowing how to balance a check book is absolutely useful whether it's something one continues to do or not. But it's foundational to basic financial literacy and teaching people to not spend more than they make.

but its not, it really isnt at all. nobody writes checks anymore so why would i need to balance anything?

I go on my account bill pay and push pay bill, it immediately comes out of my account

need to send money to someone, i dont write a check, its cash or some form of e-pay like venmo, cashapp, paypal, zelle etc....which again comes immediately out.

my account is always balanced at all times. would imagine 99% of people under 45 are similar for personal expenses.

for business...they have software that handles that very easily.

The reality is that the time isn't being used to teach something else. It's just more glitter party bullshite time.

Because elementary teachers are lazy now.

maybe get your kids in better schools because i can promise its anything but glitter party bullshite where mine go. maybe try not sending them to government run schools.

My point, or you making it for me, is that yea, we have all these tools to do the shite for us, but you still have to do it.

You have autocorrect, why didn't it catch it?
Same premise, you have to learn to do things yourself even though technology is "supposed" to do it for you

no hard feelings bb

Why teach maff when the computer do it for us??

Why is maff different than writing? Should we spend about 95% of a childs years learning how to find information on the computer. How to manage your iphone apps and settings, how to not reply all to emails, how to try to stay sober at the company Christmas party.

i have a minor in math....its very simple, math progressesively builds...what is the progression after cursive? is it typing? using a word processor?

i mean what progression is needed?

and yea you can use a calculator to find those things and we are becoming more and more practical on using the calculator but you have to understand how to put it in. pretty sure i dont need to know cursive to know how to type.

I wrote a letter of recommendation in cursive on linen paper and addressed the linen envelope in cursive. I mailed it (it miraculously made it to the recipient).

The hiring manager mailed a response to me, in cursive, thanking me for the fact that I took the time to write in cursive, stating that most letters he gets are from a word processor, and that my letter moved the applicant, the son of a close friend, to the top of the list of applicants.

Some people still appreciate it.

Unless you’re an engineer or something of that nature nobody uses advanced math in their life. I’m not saying it shouldn’t be taught but it’s not something most people use.

Cursive writing is 100% useless.

Apparently not as OP’s son came across a situation where it was needed.

Cursive has nothing to do with the success of failure of a school system. Who was responsible for educating you?

Old people will write in completely illegible cursive and then blame schools for kids not being able to read it.

I doubt anyone will need to discuss Madame Bovary, or Macbeth either. Cursive is part of how we still communicate.

for the record that shite should go away too. same with greek mytholodgy. its dumb as hell and a complete waste of time and preserved by the people who think eudcation shouldnt evolve adn classical education should remain exactly the same despite a changing world under the disguise of "its the critical thinking" when its anything but

if you want to teach critical thinking, do so.

The progression after learning cursive is learning other things that need to be conquered by simply sitting down and working on it until you get it right.

Like I said earlier, it's not being replaced by something the provides a similar learning opportunity. It's being replaced by whatever arts and crafts project allows the elementary teacher to nurse their shitty margarita hangover in peace.

Categorically false. Medical professionals, accountants, business people all need to take advance math classes. You're talking out of your arse here.

There is no comparing the usefulness of math vs cursive.

i dont have autocorrect on my internet browser. why.... because its a waste of time as i am not publishing anything, just basic communication. if i would have put it in outlook or word etc it would have caught it.
