When I was young and dumb I had pit bulls because I thought they were cool and my girlfriend at the time (who I ended up marrying) and I were idealists. We adopted them because we both loved animals and thought we were doing something good by rescuing them. I think that old Sarah Mclachlan commercial got to us. One was lab mix, the other two appeared pure bred. All were great dogs. We never had any problems with aggression. I would bring them tailgating on campus all the time and I wouldn't even need a leash. They stayed by my side and heeded my commands. Truly the best dogs I've ever owned. We even raised our daughter with them in the house. Those dogs were awesome. They were all sweet, smart, obedient and playful. I think part of the reason is that I was a good, responsible dog owner and I was absolutely the alpha in my house.

Having said that, I see now how foolish we were and I would absolutely never do that again. Too many cases of sweet dogs attacking. The problem with pit bulls is their capacity for damage. They are so damn strong and athletic and they do serious damage when they attack. If a Chihuahua snaps and attacks you there's no damage. A pit bull's attack can be deadly. I consider myself lucky that none of mine ever attacked anyone.

As for the OP, I agree with others that I wouldn't let my 10yo kid go over there anymore. The kids can still be friends and the other parents will understand.

11 years ago my daughter was mauled by my next door neighbors dog. We are fortunate that she is still with us.

both the physical and emotional trauma she endured that day and beyond I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Tell your boy to get a 'before' picture of his best friend.

In the future, he can look at it to help erase the inevitable 'after' picture left in his mind...

Ask them what's the amount of their homeowners insurance liability coverage and when are they increasing it to $1,000,000...

I see her walking the neighborhood, but no dog. Ended up talking to her, and the dog has been “sent away and won’t be returning.” Apparently the dog became aggressive one day, and attacked their son. I don’t know if it just snapped a little at the son, or went full attack mode, but haven’t seen the son in months and the dog is outta here.

Be careful around dogs that can do you harm.
I have had a shihtzu, a chihuahua and a cavapoo as house dogs, I dont let kids get in their faces. Dogs are unpredictable you never know what they will perceive as a threat. It is in their DNA. I understand that the vast majority of dogs will ever harm a human, but it is just not worth the risk.

Are they good pet owners? Is the dog friendly?

Don't think I'd let it ruin my kids friendship with his best friend but it's certainly good to be cautious.

If I had a pit and my kids friends parents called and talked to me about the dog or wanted to come be around it to see how it was, I certainly wouldn't have a problem with that and would respect them for doing it.

When I was a teenager my brother and sister had pits and they were the sweetest dogs, but they were really good pet owners. But even so, both dogs were aggressive towards other dogs they didn't know as puppies. Never aggressive towards people though.

Frankly and honestly, don't let your kid go there anymore. His buddy can still go to your house, so its not like they cant be friends.

99.9% chance it will never be a problem. When those dogs do snap though, they do so like no other dog.

I’ve had staffy’s for years. Two of them had zero prey drive and the one we have now has a little drive. We recognize this so when my grandkids come over he gets crated. He’s the sweetest dog ever but he’s still a dog. We know what he’s capable of and we won’t take a chance.

All of my dogs were bought from high end breeders that had a waiting lists. All from champion bloodlines. We buy show dogs and ruin them as pets.

I’d go ask the owners about the dog before I say my son can’t go over there. I’d also go see if they regularly crate the dog and know the responsibility of owning such a dog.

Most bully appearing dogs get grouped in with pit bulls but a true pit bull is not as common as people realize.

A true pit bull would worry me over an American Bully or Am Staff. A true pit bull could have come from fighting stock.

Meet the dog and jusge it then. While yes Pits can be very aggressive, they can also be very sweet. It really depends on the individual dog. If you don't get the feeling that its sweet, ask them to put it away when your son is at their house.

This doesn't seem like that hard of a problem to solve.

I owned a veterinary company for 11 years. Pitbulls make their attack decision with zero pre-thought, it’s just a switch that can be triggered by misinterpretation. Once the switch is flipped, no one can get them stop stop, not even the owners. You can’t beat them until they stop. They literally will not stop. The pit has no ability to think once it goes into action. Pit bulls have killed hundreds of thousands more people than you could ever find with a google search.

Meanwhile you can stop a German Sheppard or lab attack with a simple whistle or command.

One of my favorite dogs in the world is my friends pitbull, but this is 100% the reason why I would never have one or recommend anyone having them.

We can all agree that any dog CAN or may attack. The majority of the time when there are attacks, it’s the product of a shitty environment. But, when a pitbull attacks, it has the potential to be so much more devastating and you ain’t stopping it.

Anyone suggest your boy stick his finger in the dogs beehole next time he goes to visit. Establishes dominance early on.
