Are buses more susceptible to fire than other vehicles? I would think that there are statistics out there that show more deaths occur on buses due to impact trauma rather than fire. And the likelihood of fire from bus crashes are pretty low.

Thank God the earlier reports about 12 dead were false. There are still 6 children in ICU though.

I see bus drivers driving around BR speeding and careless all the time hoping things like this won't happen. I've even seen on bus driver texting at 6 am om Coursey blvd a couple weeks ago. They need to stop letting random arse people drive these buses and give multiple drug test and test drivers like they supposed to because kids live are in their hands.
Imagine the surviving kids seeing some of their friends not making it. I hope they get the proper counseling

Tennessee defines and lumps vehicular homicide into three categories:
The reckless killing of another while operating an automobile
1. by conduct creating a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury
2. by driver's alcohol or drug intoxication
3. by drag racing
Not that it'll make the situation any better, but I pray (for the families and the driver) that it was due to reckless driving and speed and not the result of alcohol or drug intoxication. I know the Hamilton County PD took the driver's blood. We'll have to wait and see.

I've never really bought that argument...how often do you hear of school buses catching on fire vs being in a wreck? Especially since they are typically Diesel...that even further reduces the risk of fire. I can understand the general logic of the argument, but I don't think the numbers play out to support it.
Now, I have seen the argument that kids from 5 years old to 18 may be riding the same bus (at different times) and that it would be very difficult to equip them with seat belts that would adequately protect the entire range of passenger sizes.
With all of that being said, the NHTSA endorsed putting seat belts on school buses in 2015. In Tennessee, only Special Needs buses are required to have seat belts. California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, and Texas all require seat belts on school buses.
In 2015, 12 states proposed bills requiring seat belts on school buses, but none of them passed.

You get what you pay for.
Two options:
1. hire the quality candidates you're talking about (which are in extremely short supply) and be willing to have your kid ride the bus for 3 hours before and 3 hours after school.
2. Privatize busses and have taxpayers or parents pay for quality candidates.
I'm sure some OT baller may be willing to foot the bill

Not hearing anything about it being intentional from CPD. 30 mph limit there and he was doing at least 60 mph.

I saw a report from CBS that one of the kids said the drive told them "Are you ready to die?"
I'm not going to believe that until they get more information from the bus's black box.

Busses have a black box? I thought they only had that camera thing. Didn't think those recorded sound.

The police officer called it a black box so I'm just going with that. I'd imagine they've got some kind of data recorder though, at least for speed and things like that.

There's also a liability factor... if the buses have seat belts, would it put the district at more risk if the bus driver doesn't walk the bus at each stop and make sure the kids are all buckled in? Similar to a flight attendant before takeoff.

In Shreveport, bus drivers are totally reckless. They stop at RR crossings, but regularly roll through stop signs, pull out into streets expecting you to stop, and always speed. It's really ridiculous. I coach and I feel unsafe riding with the lady who takes us.
And we have no seat belts on any of the buses I've been on.

Who knows if true? He might have just been a sick SOB trying to scare the kids but was going to fast to keep control. Doesn't excuse him though.
I had a young driver when I was in middle school who liked to "hot dog" the bus. He got it on 2 wheels several times around a very sharp downhill turn left where the drop off was about 10 feet into a field on the right. I am convinced to this day he did that shite to scare us.
