from my wife on i55. She says they have people stuck in cars and an 18 wheeler is on fire in front of her.

RUDDOCK, La. (WVUE) - Multiple crashes on Interstate 55, both north and southbound, have prompted closures in both directions between Ruddock and Manchac, according to state police.

Was this earlier this morning? The fog was serious this morning.

They had to close the Causeway in both directions for a while this morning.

Causeway is only half open. One lane at 25mph, fog is still very dense

All that causeway traffic still got fricked by the fog

Countless mugging and carjacking victims who were headed to NOLA will be spared

I remember the dense fog mornings and the wrecks.
I drove to Houston through one such fog event and somehow missed the two bad multicar collisions. It was 35 years ago and with the increased traffic nowadays, I'm surprised more states haven't copied what Tennessee did when they had the multifatality Collison north of Chattanooga. Automatic sensors and auto interstate closure.
eta The wiki for that wreck has a good description of the aftermath LINK
which the very good people of Louisiana should be DEMANDING for their stretch of roads.

55 is a death trap in the mornings on a clear day. Plant baws late for work pushing 100mph and tailgating the frick out of anyone going 99mph or less

Guarantee there were at least 25% of cars with no lights on.
So many fricktards who refuse to turn on lights in bad weather.

Everybody just driving 80+ in the fog/smoke?

Smoke from the East not helping. This is why the causeway has their own cops and safety staff. I have lived on the Northshore my whole life and have seen this many times on the spillway and i10 East NOLA/twin span. Rarely on the causeway. They get it shut down really quick and coned off for convoys.

They might have slowed down to 75mph. But still only leaving 15 feet between cars in front of them
