Some don't seem to get that. Dealers would be happy to make 3-5% over dealer invoice of a vehicle all day every day
Wouldn't 3-5% over invoice is going to be like 7-9% over dealer cost?

Richards Honda has a Vehicle at $3000 below MSRP as their dealer pricing best offer via email
I just bought my wife a Toyota Sienna, and the dealer online best price was $37,500 (MSRP of just over $42,000; dealer invoice of right at $39,000).
The "best price" included a $3000 Toyota incentive. I emailed them on Sunday and said I was interested in the vehicle, but only at $35,000. They called me within 5 minutes and said they could go down to $35,500. I went there the next day and signed the paperwork. No haggling, no hassles. Of course I know they didn't come down on price out of the goodness of their hearts. With the 2018 Siennas hitting the lots right now, they wanted to move the remaining 2017s, and I'm sure Toyota gave them some holdbacks or something. But at over $6,500 below MSRP, I'm happy.

Regardless of anyone's negotiation or research skills or desires, this is all that matters.
Auto manufacturers are making a lot of money, especially on trucks and large suv's.

Sorry, I’d rather have a trusted mechanic on the side. One that will tell me what needs attention, and if and for how long the repair can be put off for.

Do some research and go to the dealer with a number in mind.
Be up front. Tell them you want to be out the door for X amount.
Initially, they will tell you no way. Start to walk. They will either try to work a deal with you or let you go.
If they let you go, I promise you will get a call in a week or two. Be patient. They will come to you.
Done this for my last three vehicles, and have paid what I wanted each time. Great deals, too.
Saved $7500 off MSRP on a new SUV, $4500 on my Jeep and $3800 on a car for my kid.

It's what she asked for, so I have no problem with that.

I'd rather spend my money locally and have relationships with local dealers for when I need maintenance. That's worth spending a few hundred more on the vehicle to me
By no means am I suggesting traveling 500 miles to save a few hundred. That wouldn't really save you money. But my experience has been saving thousands of dollars, not hundreds. I'll drive 500 miles to save $5,000 dollars.
