Beginning Friday, more than 100 vacant city-owned lots throughout New Orleans will be made available to people who live next door, a statement from the mayor's office said.

"The program offers neighbors who own property adjacent to a blighted lot the opportunity to apply to take care of and eventually purchase such vacant lots," the statement said.

People who live adjacent to these properties can extend their yards or home into them, depending on zoning and land use regulations — but people wishing to push out the borders of their property need first apply to the program.

New Orleans residents who qualify must agree to maintain the property for at least one year then pay for the lot's assessed value.

The city will deduct $875 from the total cost of the purchase, and that deduction represents the cost of maintaining the lot for the year.

Applicants will have to make a deposit of $650 if they're approved.

Then what is the incentive?

The people in my neighborhood can’t even mow their primary yard much less an adjacent lot

Some of the lots even in uptown New Orleans are truly unkempt and disgusting.

Does the city own these lots and pay to cut the grass on them?

This will end well when 3-4 people start claiming that they actually own the property.

Well, you get to mow it for a year to get the opportunity to buy the lot at an over inflated value.

So you get to do yard work in a blighted property for a $875 deduction off the price to own said blighted property?

If the city owns the lots, I don’t think you can gain ownership by acquisitive prescription. I don’t think it will apply to property owned by government.

So can I own the playground next to my house? City mows the grass once a month.

There's going to be some shady shenanigans coming out of that program.

875 deduction off the price to BUY said blighted property. There is absolutely nothing special about this. This is just a play to try to dump the properties at appraised value tobshupid people.

I haven't lived in LA for a decade or so, but I'm going to assume the appraised value on these lots is stupid high.
