I'm considering moving to Reno. I live in the NE with high taxes and expensive homes. Reno looks attractive with no state income tax and 30 mins to Lake Tahoe. Anyone have any opinions on this? I have some family in CA so this would be closer to them though most family is in Louisiana.

Reno? Really? Of all the places in this country, you are thinking Reno, Nevada?

Should have originally asked, what do you do for a living?

You can live in Nevada and be on Lake Tahoe.

Don’t have to live in Reno.

I've only ever visited and driven through but besides Lake Tahoe it's pretty isolated out there in the desert was my impression.

NoCal is one of the prettiest, most scenic places in the country. Reno is just outside of that. There literally is nothing to the East of Reno.
Tahoe is incredible

It's not as bad as some make it out to be. Near some beautiful scenery.

You know the lady's a lot like Reno,

She ain't got a heart,

and she don't care when you're down

It looks pretty nice to me.

I'd love all the trail running, hiking, and skiing.

Reno fricking blows... but as you point out your in driving distance of Lake Tahoe. That’s a big plus. Not much to write home about.

You’re not as isolated as you think, you’re just on the edge of being isolated. Sacramento is only 2 hours away.

Yeah, but I think Reno is a lot cheaper. Even so, it's not like 15 years ago when it was super cheap. I have relatives there and the Californians rolled in and jacked up prices. Still, I'm guessing it's relatively affordable and a great jumpoff point for skiing and hiking.

I'm a project manager and can live anywhere. Eliminating state & local income tax would save over $15k. Housing prices in Reno are comparable to suburbs where I live now, but property taxes are lower in Reno based on my review.

I'd rather live in a nicer spot but the no income tax in Reno with Tahoe 30 mins away is a huge selling point.

A project manager is pretty vague. I’m a project manager also but in an industry where I can’t just live anywhere.

Reno is basically a whiter, weirder version of Shreveport. Combine that with the weird lack of culture and community that tends to be the norm in transit cities...hard pass

I lived in vegas for four years and have spent time in Reno 3 times. Moved back to texas a year ago and am happier here, even with covid and all this political insanity going on, than I was there

You're overvaluing money and proximity to a nice place, and undervaluing what you see and do every day and who you end up being around all the time
