Some of the neighborhoods on the southern tip along 431 in the Galena/Saddlehorn area and up to Montreux are really nice.
Yep, there are some nice areas of town.

I would move to South Lake Tahoe tomorrow if the wife would.

Reno, much like the entirety of Nevada outside the Strip, is depressing as hell. Good luck

Reno is a weird place. Hard to describe the culture there. It’s a strange mix of junkies, gamblers, and cowboys in my experience. Yes, Tahoe is close but you can find better places out west. I would suggest Bend, Oregon or several places in Idaho if you like relatively inexpensive outdoors hubs. Chico, California is also fairly close and offers many of the same perks.

That's most of Nevada in general. Addiction and desperation hang in the air. You can feel the despair like heat

True, it might be the most desolate state in the U.S.

You know the lady's a lot like Reno, she ain't gotta heart and she don't care when you're down...just like lights of the casino.
She'll pull you in ..play with you a while..there ain't now ay to win..I know

It takes self motivation to live there. Hence why my family was always in a national park or at Mt. Charleston

I lived in Tahoe City (CA) and Incline Village (NV) on the north shore. Loved it up there and hope to move back some day.

My point is you’re near some nice California geography if you want to go hiking, see the redwoods, go out to Napa, see the coast, etc.

All I’ve got for you is that I know several people from schools I went to that were born and raised in Reno. Every one of them moved back home to Reno at the end of the day. They all seem to love it.

I have to go to Reno quite a bit for work. The area near the Riverwalk is the only part of town I'd consider living Reno is a very small, poor man's Vegas with lots of homeless and transients. Downtown is down right depressing.
