re: Moving to New York in your 20s

There are 2 kinds of ppl who want to move to New York:
80% female because they love the flashing lights, time square, broadway, shopping, Louis Vuitton, and luxury clothing electronic ads posted everywhere. Art museums where they pretend to understand the obscure art. That’s the majority
But then you have your:
20% Finance bro’s who are hideously insecure about their image, blow their entire paycheck on having the nicest watch, suits, apartment. Mostly unbearable and 90% of his time is worrying if people think he’s successful and upper class enough. American Psycho paints this absolutely spot on.

Flyover state people are so insecure about NYC. It’s wild
Posted on 12/29/25 at 3:35 pm to Prominentwon
Old coworker did, and is still there.
Dude was from down the bayou and got laid off from our job we both worked at. Dude just up and moved to New York.
At first he sub-leased a room in an apartment with 2-3 other people he didn't know. Now he has his own place with his wife and kid.
It's been about 10 years for him. I really didn't think he'd make it, but proved me wrong.

I wouldn't mistake being repulsed by something and never wanting any part of it or the people there for insecurity.
My industry is largely centered in NYC, I make enough that I could live there, but never wanted to. Did 20 years in Chicago and that was good for me. I was just in NYC for the first time in my 3 years at my current company, which is headquartered in Manhattan, because I've been avoiding it as long as possible.

Living in Chicago and being repulsed by and avoiding Manhattan is absolutely hilarious, and tbh screams insecurity

Me and my then girlfriend and now wife did it after college. We were there about 7.5 years.
It put jetpacks on our careers and income

Chicago and NYC have very little in common. Do better.

She's trying to make it in TV production. She'll have plenty on OnlyFans soon

I saw this for three years. Those people live in a bubble. They think the world outside of that bubble is stupid and ignorant.

Because I don't really like NYC and the weather there sucks a decent portion of the year. I can do a few nights in Manhattan and am itching to get out of there. And I value the nights and weekends where I live so much I don't want to leave to go anywhere else.

Have you or anyone you know ever made that jump? Someone close to me has been talking about moving to NYC after college. It’s that early- to mid-20s “let’s go try to make it” kind of move. And by make it, I mean actually being able to live there and build a life…..not just scrape by for a few months. She’d be starting mostly from scratch, picking up smaller jobs at first. There will be a little help getting her started, but she understands that it’ll be a struggle for a little while. She’ll be looking to get her foot into production….behind-the-scenes work for TV, radio, theater, that kind of thing. Just curious if anyone here has tried it themselves or knows someone who did and how it did, or didn’t, work out for them.
What do you want to know?
NY was incredible before the pandemic. Endless opportunity. I’ve visited a few times in the last few years and it’s still not what it was. Many buildings are still not fully occupied, dying restaurants and what not.
How they handled the pandemic killed it for me. Destroyed lives and businesses. You can have a good quality of life outside of the apartment, being away as much as possible. But once they force you in it with 2-3 other roommates to work from home, nope. Gone.

They have a wonderful new commie mayor. By all means they should move to that shithole!

NYC is where miserable people go to become more miserable.

$1500 You’ll be sharing a broom closet. In Harlem.
Having roommates is relatively cheap though. Decent areas, maybe $2k a person if you have 3 roommates.

You’re right, but LA is even more miserable. The best option if living in LA is moving to Houston or Atlanta. NY-ish opportunities and the low COL/space.
