New York City is a lot of fun if you're young and super extraverted.

But, even if you are young and super extraverted, if you aren't making a lot of money, living in New York City is a massive struggle.

I had a family member move there out of college. He lived in a shoe box apartment, but tolerated it because he was having so much fun going out with his friends where he wasn't even around the apartment much.

Time went on, he started having job issues (it certainly feels like, on average, jobs in NYC have higher standards than jobs elsewhere), he got tired of living in a tiny apartment, had a rodent problem in this tiny apartment, everything was extraordinarily expensive (along with high taxes), and he eventually just couldn't do it anymore and moved away.

As an introvert who doesn't want to rely on public transport and likes green space, the thought of having a crowded, non-drivable city, where the only real green I would see is in one specific park would be enough to drive me insane. And I literally couldn't afford to live there on my current salary without living in some cheap shoebox where I would almost assuredly have pest issues.

No thank you.

My daughter moved there in September. Graduated in Music Theatre in May. 2bd room apt in Astoria for $2600. So her share is $1300. We are providing some support while she auditions and secures enough other work to make ends meet. It is a very small chance of success in this industry but the regret of not trying I think is worse. If it doesn’t work out, she has the experience of living in one of the most amazing cities in the world. She went halfway across the country to college not knowing a single person there. So I think she has the fortitude to be on her own in NYC. If anyone has any connections in the industry, hit me up please.

Why did she need a car? She should have sold it

I’ve never head an executive assistant job being described as something an overachiever does.

New York City would be a great place to live if you’re wealthy. It would be miserable if you’re not.

What do you mean by “wealthy”? And why would it be miserable if you aren’t?

Knew a few who did this during/after college. 1 made it somewhat, he’s been an extra in a few shows but not a household name. The other came about similarly, broadway stuff but they both make a living. Everyone else came back after a while

My son did. He joined IATSE in New Orleans and transferred to NYC after a couple of years. TV/film and stage jobs are mostly union. Most unions require working a certain amount of days before joining. Some live TV is staffed by IBEW.

If you want to work behind the scenes in TV, NEP and Game Creek Video both have engineering apprenticeship programs. Plenty of work in NYC.

Moving to Mamdaniland is a bold move.

Best ways to succeed in NYC

1. Money. Lots of it.

2. Born / Raised in NYC with a lifetime of connections

3. Eccentric with non-American heritage

When we were visiting her she was auditioning for a play.
While there we met a young man that lives in Hammond.

Have you or anyone you know ever made that jump?

I know quite a few who did just that. One or two stuck it out, most left. Most of the friends and family I know who have kids in NYC with legit jobs, finance, accounting, law, are subsidizing them to the tune of 24 to 50k a year so they can live in nice areas. Only a few are totally off the tit.
I have never seen the attraction to New York but many love it, it is their Mecca.
