but with lots of outdoor opportunities.. in the summer.
As much in winter. You can downhill ski within sight of downtown.

Agree. And surrounded by natural beauty to boot.
You gotta drive a bit, but the Canadian Rockies are impressive as hell. The area around town is mainly prairie.
Anchorage is actually a bit colder than Calgary, but not by much. Calgary is windy though which is a huge negative

Calgary is a pretty nice town....
For 2 months of the year. It gets cold AF, and I’m not talking the cold you’re used to if you’re from the South. It was -40degrees once when I was there a couple years ago. And it stays cold AF for months on end. You also have to pop vitamin D pills because it’s hard to get good sunlight.

Calgary EASILY. That’s not even close provided your compensation and taxation is relatively the same.

Calgary. Gateway to Banff and Jasper national parks. Heaven on earth.

I've been to Calgary several times and worked there two months when our office there was between managers and they were in the middle of a mail strike and someone had to go up and make decisions about designing new lab space.
It was a wet summer and I still have a cartoon of a couple reading a newspaper, with mushrooms growing in their carpet and bitching that the mail only went on strike after federal taxes were due.
I love the Rockies up there, they are at a much lower elevation that the Colorado and Wyoming Rockies. The air is crystal clear, there's still snow and it's breathtakingly beautiful. Camping is best done in a camper as there are bears, and they can tear apart whatever they want to. It is a city. In winter you plug your car radiator into a heather so it will start when you want it to. The people are not liberal and every so often start suggested secession from the rest of Canada.
My question for you: welding outdoors in the winter? Or indoors?
It gets air straight off the Arctic. And it gets dark earlier than Boston and stays dark longer in winter.
But I love that part of Canada because they are individuals and not warped from living along the US border.

Alaska.
60-65K you'll be fine. Try looking outside of Anchorage.
No state sales tax or income tax. Stay for 2 years and get pfd (extra money for being Alaska resident).
You'll have tons of stuff to do during the summer. Learn how to snowmachine or some winter sport and you'll be fine in the winters.

Calgary easily, pretty cool town
Anchorage sucks balls, but there are some decent places a few hours away.
If it wasn't for family, I wouldn't go back to New Orleans.

NOLA area has more jobs. Anchorage is expensive as hell.

Do you prefer black people or white people?

Anchorage was the second WalMart I’ve ever been in (Billings being the other) where there was zero diversity. Customers or workers. It was kind of surreal.

The further you get from the border, the more sane Canadians become.

Are you from Boston? Live in Boston? Ever lived in the South?
The harsh difference in summer heat and humidity is going to be an unwelcomed shock. South Louisiana has some of the worst humidity in the US, and it can be stifling for months on end. There's little reprieve at night or in the mornings too especially if you're not accustomed to muggy air.
With that said, I don't know if $65k/year as a welder is enough to afford Calgary. Anchorage seems romantic on the surface, but it's not Juneau, which is where Roger lives. Juneau has decent weather. You can look it up on Wikipedia. Juneau doesn't get that brutally cold and has nice summers. You're going to have a deep, harsh, brutal winter in Anchorage from late October through March.
Also, in Anchorage, you're a long way away from the world you currently live in. There aren't any close by road trips to see a new city. You won't have any professional sports teams to hop over to see. Restaurants, concerts, and big city entertainment will be a world away. There's a sense of isolation in Alaska that many Alaskans thrive on, and I don't think most people in the continental US would want.

Anchorage actually has a lot of stuff like this for a city of it's size.
Both Juneau and Anchorage are in the top 5 for per capita restaurants.
