You really might be better off living close to Bluebonnet, mainly because of the morning and afternoon congestion on the main thoroughfares surrounding it. Perkins Rowe, as someone suggested, could be a good starting point. I grew up in the Westminster area and am biased for that, tho.
Most of the apartments on Jefferson are older and have been fixed up many times over the years. Anything down Bluebonnet will be newer, except for Cypress Park near the movie studios. But i’ve Lived in Cypress Park before and didn’t mind it at all.
If you decide to rent a house you can’t beat the Westminster/Pine Park area, really. It’s a great place to live that’s not far from any place you need to go.
Port Vincent floods in places every couple of years or so (as do most of the tributaries...if you’re only going to be here for several years don’t live on the banks of any of the rivers). Prairieville is growing so damn fast the traffic sucks arse a lot (but still not as bad as BR). It’s not a bad place to live, however.

You’ll get lots of replies from idiots. I’ve lived in 6 states and traveled all over the world. Baton Rouge is my favorite city on earth.
Anywhere within 5 miles of your work will be perfectly fine.

Traffic going into Baton Rouge from Gonzales and in reverse at the end of the day sucks.
In that regard, find a place to live close to work (off Bluebonnet) or live somewhere west of Bluebonnet/I-10 (against the bulk of rush hour traffic): Acadian Thruway/I-10 area -- near LSU lakes), University Hills, Garden District, MidCity, Highland Road south of LSU.
Over the years, I have seen many houses for rent. Try Trulia.com or Realtor.com for rentals.

Oh heck, there are too many negative remarks to quote in this thread alone.
If you are a recruit or better yet a family member of a recruit please read this thread! These quotes are from people who are from Louisiana. Would you send your kid to Baton Rouge after reading all of this?

CJs Daquiris at Bluebonnet and Jefferson is a great little dive bar on days you want to wait out traffic.

That's not very progressive of you, Joshy. But you're not wrong
If you look at the map for 2013 and see a murder in Oakleigh Apts off Perkins, Just know I solved that one for EBRSO.

Kenilworth, Perkins area is the only answer if you want to live in Baton Rouge.
I love to fish also and living there you could be fishing in an hour or less depending on what you like to fish.
If you don’t want to live in BR then Prarieville is fine but don’t think it will save you much time when you go fishing but it sure will add to your commute time.
Again, we don’t know your job details either so it’s hard to give you better ideas

Check out these newer neighborhoods if you want something safe, new, very close to Bluebonnet and under 300k.
1. off Burbank going southeast from Lee to Highland there are several new hoods.
2. hwy 30(Nicholson) on edge of St Gabriel/br (this is 5 min from Bluebonnet's southern end.
3. Perkins near Pecue. This section of Perkins is getting widened and Pecue will get an I-10 interchange (soon as the state settles an access road dispute with the Kleinpeters).
If you're on the north side of I-10 on Bluebonnet, check out Westminister And the actual neighborhood Bluebonnet runs through, Jefferson Terrace. These are older and safe/solid neighborhoods. JT has some new filings buried in it that are hidden gems in SE Baton Rouge.

A. Port Vincent isn't Baton Rouge. And I don't think they would be offended by me saying that.
B. If you're worried about having "Playstation incident" let's just say there aren't alot of "gamers" in that area...
