Move over helicopter parents, meet the lawnmower parents (Article)

Stuff like this make me question if I'm going to be a good parent someday. It's gotta be insanely difficult to let your child fight their own battles, but we're seeing the repercussions of kids who never had to face any sort of real adversity dropped into the real world.

As a parent in todays world, walking the line between overbearing and neglectful is blurry at times. I firmly believe in allowing my kids to fail and I attempt to give them freedom to do so but that can at times put you in the spotlight of the parents that feel kids need to be wrapped up in a bow and presented to the world as a perfect representation of the future.
You see quite a bit of this inregards to sports and watching parents try and steer friendships. The sports is difficult for me because Ive been volunteering as a coach for over ten years, both with my kids and without. Having these discussions with parents regarding there child and whatever sport is going on is a fascinating look into these peoples lives and how insecure they have made themselves.

This parenting is very prevalent at my daughter's private Christian academy. It's triggering, honestly. Not only that, it's on an "it takes a village" scale. The moms gather like a gang and blather about parenting with heads always on a swivel. It's interesting to watch,

I feel sorry for new parents. They'll be accused of doing too little or too much. State can yank your kid if he/she wonders off for a minute, or you can be socially ostracized as a hovering parent.

Meh, always better to err on the side of neglectful. We've gotta very laissez faire attitude at the house. Our motto, "we didn't ask for them and they didn't ask to be here, so why force it?"

Err on the side of letting them make their own decisions.
