That's pitiful. Not on your part, on the part of employers who do that. If you don't mind me asking, what industry are you in?

You've never worked for a company that used policies to control workstation settings?
Posted on 6/7/19 at 8:11 am to MorbidTheClown
I haven't. I've worked in both private industry as well as with the state government before and the closest I've gotten was one employer had the right to tap into your PC camera to make sure you were at your desk working but other than that, no.
By the way, when they started doing that I left. I'm not unproductive at work but I just refuse to be "spied" on like that. If someone hires me to do some work for them, I place a level of trust in them that I expect in return.

I would outright refuse to work for an employer who did this to its employees.
Employer who did what? Make sure their employees aren’t sleeping?

Why does it matter if your computer goes to sleep? Mine does occasionally during the work day when I step away. Are you saying that your boss monitors when your computer is sleeping or something?
That's pretty lame.

If an employer hires someone then they should be 100% confident that that person will perform. Call me old school but I just don't like policies like that.
Plus, it's quite hard to start babe threads on the OT when the boss is watching.
Kidding, kidding -- okay no I'm not.

This is much more concerning than them controlling at what time intervals your computers goes to sleep. The sleep thing is mostly for security purposes in the event that you step away from your computer and someone comes in behind you and does some sort of nefarious act on your workstation.
ETA: I would never work for a company that tapped into my laptop camera, frick all that

it's not really about making sure you're working.it used to be to avoid screen burn in. Now it's a security risk. You walk away without locking your computer , the sleep mode kicks in and locks it so no one else can use it.

Okay now that I completely understand. Maybe I just read into the OP the wrong way?
Having said that, literally every single employer I've ever worked for actually had policies in place that required you to lock your screen anytime you stepped away. I've always worked in an industry that involved very sensitive personal information, though. I know all kinds of people's bidnez

Good employees wouldn't have to worry about it.

Not sure how well it would work for a mouse, but I've seen people hook up a fan that turns side to side, to hit the xbox controller stick to make the player move so they won't get booted from the game. They do that so they can log in the hours to get completion points. Just get a fan like that and tape a string to the mouse and to the fan and let it do the moving for you.
Also you could probably lay out some crushed up coke cans with pebbles in it in like a 5 yard radius so if your supervisor comes around he'll pick them up raising hell and you can then wake up from your nap in time.

Flip a tape dispenser over and have it rest on the ctrl key.
Will think you are pushing a button and never go to sleep.

This! If a boss can't trust an employees to be effective and actually complete their job functions. Then either the employees need to be trained and start on a PIP program with the threat of replacement; or the manager needs to be replaced because they cannot effectively motivate their team. Better performance evaluations will go a long way to ensure the employee is on the right track and has realistic expectations; and it will put measurables on the manager for upper management to see how effective they are at their job.
FYI, I would venture to guess that 75% of employee failures is due to ineffective managers. There are too many people out there that just mail it in once they get that management title and expect their employees to meet their expectations without any additional mentoring or communication about expectations.
/rant. Sore subject for me as I've been on the wrong end of terrible management/mentoring twice in my career.

Yeah most IT can see what apps are open and which are active.
Same with browser sessions, they can break down how much each tab was active in your browser. Not just open, active.
Signed IT Guy, with mouse jiggler on, on TD, and youtube.
Most IT doesn't give a shite, you have a shitty boss.
