Yosemite National Park outside of Yosemite valley.
Yosemite is one of the most visited parks, yet 95% of the park is hardly touched.

Thats even true of Yellowstone. Get a mile from the road and you get away from nearly all the people.

Driving up the Dalton Hwy. Assuming there's no snow in the pass in late Aug. We will make a couple of hikes around Galbraithe lake that we can "access" from the hwy.

Not a National Park... but a State Park...

The Valley of Fire in Nevada is amazing.

A short drive north of Vegas, for me it's a "must visit" every time I go to Vegas.

Fantastic views, canyons, petroglyphs.....

.. and if you just appreciate driving, the roads are terrific.
Keep an eye on your rear view mirror, it's a popular place for the local super car/bike community.

Do the full loop I-15 thru the park to Lake Mead and end up at the Hoover Dam

White Sands may not be the best for numerous days but it is a really cool spot and very surreal, especially if you can go on a Full Moon night.

Big bend

It’s my favorite. But as a Texan it’s cheating. You can take 2-3 days and knock out Carlsbad caverns, White Sands, Guadalupe, and Big Bend.

Guadalupe is underrated as I never see it mentioned.

Would have been Zion back in the day but everyone finally discovered it. I will say Acadia up in Maine.

Not underrated at all. I was there this week. Be sure to have a reservation to drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain. Hordes of people there.

Underrated would be something like Great Basin National Park.

Smoky Mountains have the largest population of these in the Western hemisphere.

Pulled the lottery to see them a few years ago (lottery because there's limited parking) and it was pretty cool.

See them down in Maryville and Knoxville sometimes too.

Most people that visit North Cascades, never actually make it into the park. The northern and southern sectors are separated by a small strip of national forest land. That’s where the only road and campgrounds are located. So unless hiking away from the road, most are unlikely to ever step foot into north cascades.

Diablo Lake and all of the surrounding attractions are great even if you never step into the actual NP.

There was a book, "The Art of Keeping Your arse Alive," which stated that almost everyone that died in a national park/resort area died within a mile of a road (stranded, thirsty, etc.)

An iPhone isn't a compass. A compass is a compass. Nobody is prepared for anything.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Mammoth Cave National Park. I think I was there 40 years ago and can still remember parts of it.

I know it's off topic, but the graveyards overseas managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission have *never* failed to be spectacular. Even when you go to lesser known cemeteries for WWI in the middle of nowhere in France, etc., they're just immaculate. And draining.

I can not support this more. Every American should visit those cemeteries.

Gates of the Arctic would be cool to visit if there was anyway to get there. You pretty much need a helicopter to see it. No roads or trails.
