And they plan on cutting off a certain waterway?

Excuse my ignorance, but how does sinking something stop flow?

Any photos or videos of this?

Excuse my ignorance but why would Stephensville be affected? They are outside the Spillway levee

They can do it to divert water. It still has to go somewhere, but they can control the flow

They sink barges, or sink barges on top of other sunken barges, across the span of whatever waterway they are trying to keep the water from getting in

They don’t sink them below the level of the water unless they are putting something else on top

I’m not usually an alarmist but I have a very real fear the opening may result in catastrophic flooding within the floodway.

Lol. Catastrophic flooding within the... FLOODWAY. That's what it's there for. People inside the floodway know the risks and are warned every year.

Morgan City will be okay but the river will get high.

They are surrounded by water, and the south winds are pushing water up

Plus lots of rain

It’s already high. It’s up against the floodwall on top of the levee

Good point but all the backwater flooding is going to be severe.

It's high but has a lot of room to go. The Atchafalaya was 2 feet higher in 2011.

I think he was asking why would the opening of the morganza harm stephensville

The answer is it won’t. However, stephensville is already at its breaking point and the water is till rising. But morganza isn’t really an issue for them

You might want to look at a Morganza flood plain map

It wouldn’t cause catastrophic flooding on its own, but combined with the high water they already have it could get hairy

Hwy 70 in PP is under water in some spots

I doubt they have to open Morganza more than they opened it in 2011. The river isn't as high this time.

And nothing says they're opening it for sure. They thought hard about opening it in 93, 2008, and 2016.

This is the map from 2011 for a 25% opening of Morganza to look at the backwater flooding.

They only opened 17 of 125 bays in 2011. They probably wouldn't have to open more than that and would likely open less than that and divert less water than 2011 since the river isn't nearly as high.

They must be concerned about the length of this flood. This is the longest streak of days above flood stage ever for the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge. They'll open it to take some pressure off ORCS if they have to but it won't be as much water as 2011.

Thats my point. He morganza won’t have much effect on stephensville. But just north of stephensville around 4 mile bayou has been fricked for about a month now anyway

Most likelihood is that it floods to highland road with about 1-2 ft of water

Almost every one of LSU athletic facilities gets water in it then

They get backwater flooding. The reason they're having such trouble now more than 2011 is the length of this flood. The longer it stays up, the more backwater flooding becomes an issue. Couple that with the inability to drain local rain and you've got major issues.

Correct. But once again, the morganza opening itself is of little effect for them.

a pretty major difference is we were mostly dry back in 2011

we've had more rain and everything is much more wet this time... the ground can't absorb nearly as much water this time around
