The cruise line giant Carnival Corporation and its Princess subsidiary have agreed to pay a criminal penalty of $20 million for environmental violations such as dumping plastic waste into the ocean. Princess Cruise Lines has already paid $40 million over other deliberate acts of pollution.
U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz approved the terms of the deal during a hearing Monday in Miami. She had appeared to grow increasingly frustrated as the company continued to flout environmental laws during the course of the years-long case.
"You not only work for employees and shareholders. You are a steward of the environment," she told Carnival CEO Arnold Donald, who attended the hearing with other senior executives. "The environment needs to be a core value and I hope and pray it becomes your daily anthem."

Miami-based Carnival pleaded guilty Monday to six probation violations, including the dumping of plastic mixed with food waste in Bahamian waters. The company also admitted sending teams to visit ships before the inspections to fix any environmental compliance violations, falsifying training records and contacting the U.S. Coast Guard to try to redefine what would be a "major non-conformity" of their environmental compliance plan.

She sounds very emotional.
Good reason why women shouldn't be judges.

20M seems like a small price to pay considering they were already on probation.

Carnival is trash.
Most fat people I've ever seen in my life. Watered down alcohol package. Cramped rooms. Hot water not working. Joke of a casino. Only good food was the ice cream machine.

As a human being on this earth, I really don't care if cruise ships are dumping plastic waste into the ocean. I really don't. That probably makes me a bad person but it truly doesn't affect me whatsoever.

A 20M fine is like a parking ticket to Carnival. That's not a penalty at all, and won't deter them from from doing this in the future.

Just give that company the death penalty. Cruises are a nasty strain on the environment in this regard and have been since their existence.

Carnival is the trailer park of cruise ships.

Read a story yesterday about this. Basically, they can't figure out how to seperate plastic trash from food trash. For example, the little pieces of paper that butter pats are on, or coffee stirrers, or syrup containers, etc.
Carnival (and other cruise lines) are held to these environmental laws. They are also held to strict food safety laws. It's certainly easier to comply with food safety rules when you use single-serving sizes of everything, but, that does increase waste and cause this mixed waste problem.
So basically, Carnival has said F it, we aren't going to use single serving sizes anymore. Butter will be in ceramic dishes, condiments will be in large dispensers, etc. Might harm food safety but hey the oceans will be "preserved"
Also... how does US court have jurisdiction over what happens in Bahamas waters?
