I truly think the difference in outcomes and spread is due to life styles between CA and NYC. I mean just look at population densities and the prevalence of automobiles

You have a point. Subways became major spreaders in NYC. Also, there is a large religious population in New York that refused to adhere to lockdown measures.

California's public transit system is not nearly as popular. California also has a much larger Asian American population. The virus could have been moving through population for months.

(Los Angeles is a metropolitan area of 13m people, and only about 360,000 people use rail on an average weekday, and just 855,000 ride the bus. To put this into context, in New York, with a population of 20m, approximately 5m ride the subway on an average weekday.)

Warm and dry climate. I think NYC leaving the subways running is ultimately going to be the biggest factor in spread.

but I know a number of people here in Alabama who swear they got the coronavirus as early as late December.

Sounds like rock solid proof to me. This is the basis for most scientific conclusions.

Great work, Jim-bob Curie..

That means this virus has been circulating in the population far longer than the January 15 "patient zero" in Washington.

I have a coworker that believes he and his family had it in November. Everyone in his family suffered flu like symptoms but when (the entire family..) was tested, it all came back negative for the flu...

I suggested at some point he and his family get the antibody test.

Hmmm, I know some people hate the TSA and all that rigamarole, but I wouldn’t go that far.

I admit this is anecdotal but I could have sworn I got it in early january. My wife, son and her coworkers also got sick at the same time.

Remember all those school closures due to the "flu"?

Don’t be. I was certain I had it. Mardi Gras day I got super sick in a Georgia and it’s was severe respiratory that lingered for two weeks. I’ve never had prior respiratory sicknesses .
I am flying to Mexico via private plane Monday for work and a we had the antibody test done in Covington last week. We all came back negative .

Understood, I'm not thinking we definitely had it, just saying it was odd for my family. The chances of my son ending up in ICU from croup is way below 1%, wife had never been to hospital before that.

My cousin has had coronavirus since like February. He goes to the doctor for it and gets better but he gets sick again once he runs out of medicine. It’s really sad, when he doesn’t have his medicine he can barely get out of bed, has whole body aches, diarrhea, it’s really bad and I hope they can find a cure soon

Understood, I was just on the same boat being certain that I had it. Either I was wrong or their proclaimed 92% accurate was incorrect.

How exactly is a death in February proof that not only was it here before 1/15, but was “likely” here in Dec.

I swear, you are one of the worst ones to take a fact and spin it to mean whatever you want it to.

The maths, dey aint dat hard

Fact: died on 2/6
Fact: 5-14 days pass before onset of symptoms
Fact: 5-8 days after onset of symptoms for it to become fatal
. . . . therefore transmission date was around 1/18
Fact: 1st known positive in the US was 1/21
Fact: that patient had returned from China on 1/15
. . . . no way a guy in Seattle, under quarantine, passed the Wuhan flu to someone in San Fran in under 3 days

Therefore, the San Fran patient was infected by someone who contacted the virus around the time frame of 1/4, or as OP suggested, likely in Dec

He died with it not necessarily of it. He easily may have contracted Covid in February, then died of a heart attack on Feb 6. He could have got in Feb 1, 2, 3, 4. All three article said is they tested a tissue sample for it and it was positive.

What you said is very likely also. But by no means a guarantee.
