Summed up by three little letters: DEI. Imagine doing an in-depth comparison of the personnel at NASA in the 60s vs today.

Post a pic of mission control in 1969
Here's a bunch of baws from McDonnell Douglas, checking in for the 3rd stage. The biggest dork in the pic is my grandpa, which is why they let him be chief engineer

Obviously.
But you would think that the greatest achievement in human history would be documented in such painstaking detail that it would make it far easier for it to be duplicated, especially with technology exponentially superior
This is why we wouldn't waste time building the factories to machine the parts we used 55 years ago. We have superior technology now. Our rockets are more efficient so we would build everything else around that technology.

Were scientists 60 years ago so much more brilliant than scientists today that they were able to send a man to the moon in a toaster with some Radio Shack technology but todays scientists can't get it done with todays computing power?

The first few mars rovers were launched on a 50s era nuke, that got a slight makeover in the 80s

We just don't want to bad enough anymore. That's literally the only reason we haven't gone back. It's expensive af, and we see no need to go kick moon dust with human feet anytime soon.
Lol, I got news for you....

Dan Pettit at NASA said that they would go back to the moon in a nanosecond but the problem is that we don't have the technology to do that anymore.
We used to but we destroyed that technology and it's a painful process to build it back.
Once Starship is ready we're going back. NASA has already funded a lunar landing version. SpaceX will eventually use Starship to go to Mars.
Starship w/ it's booster is bigger than the Saturn V and has twice the thrust.
I hope to get down to Boca Chica in the next year or two to witness what's sure to be a spectacle.

I’d wager it’s more like they don’t have the budget, or something.
At its peak, the Apollo program consumed 4% of the federal budget, today NASA is less than 0.5%.

They don't even know how many genders there are or how to define a woman now.

If you don't do something for 60 years, you lose a lot of institutional knowledge. The people that knew how to that and more importantly had the ability to pass down that knowledge are dead.
We ended up spending about $20B to get there, and it was an expensive PR stunt, and after we pulled it off, the public didn't care anymore.
Also don't discount the fact that we got extremely lucky to pull that off and our tolerance for risk of life was much higher in the 60s and 70s.

That's pretty cool! Did your grandpa ever talk about what it was like to work with Stanley Kubrick?

No, but the 3 apollo 16 crew did show up to his funeral, and regaled my older brother and I about traveling to the moon... so that's like a close 2nd

There's no way an organization with that many women in one place can actually get anything done.

Strange how scientists with today's modern technology aren't sure if we can pull it off again, or even exactly how to do it.
YEAH STRANGE, RIGHT? THAT'S WHAT WE SHOULD CALL IT, RIGHT?
STRANGE.
