An Ouachita Parish man is facing one count of felony theft after a dog in his care was not returned to its owner.
According to an arrest report for Lester Langley, age 44, OPSO was contacted Saturday about a missing Labrador retriever the owner valued at $25,000.
The victim in the case said he dropped his dog off with Langley, a dog trainer, in July. He said Langley later told him he transported the dog out of state briefly for training but brought him back.
On Sept. 21, Langley contacted the victim and said the dog was dead.
Per the warrant, the victim told Langley he would come over to pick up the dog, and Langley said he had already buried the dog.
"(The victim) stated he told Lester to unbury the dog, and he would be on his way to pick up the dog," the warrant states.
The deputy made a return trip with an investigator, and Langley came outside and said he would show the investigators where the dog was buried.
Langley reportedly indicated a very shallow hole and started to dig scoops from the hole. According to the warrant, he then said, "The dog is missing. This is where I buried it."
Langley said the dog died of unknown causes on Saturday morning and advised he buried the dog with the help of a friend. He denied selling the dog due to its value, the report states.

Holy shite that is an expensive dog - only dogs I have seen fetching such prices are stud schutzhunds or IPO title winners. Maybe some duck hunting dogs can fetch that, but holy cow!

$25k dog? Why is it so valuable?
Did it involve peanut butter?

That's the stock photo for "dog trainer from Monroe".

He should have stolen a shelter dog. He'd end up with less vet bills in the long run.
Or so they say.

Most likely field trials. The owner is factoring in the training he has spent on the dog. When he bought the puppy it might have been $3k - $5K to start. I'm guessing this is a trainer for Field Trials that stole the dog. The world of Field Trial can be very expensive. Owners can be 5K-10K in the hole when the dog is washed out. They just aren't cut out to win field trials and not worth spending $500 to $1k+ to continue to train.

That's on the high end but it's not uncommon to see fully trained retreivers go for $10k and up. Puppies with a good bloodline routinely fetch $1500 or more. I've never heard of this guy but he has pretty good internet word of mouth. I wonder if he abused the dog and didn't want the owner to see the evidence.

I can definitely believe $10k for a fully trained lab, maybe even $15k, but $25k just seems so excessive. Nothing better than a well-trained lab or gsd though.

He trains hunting dogs as well as field trial dogs. People will do some crazy stuff when it comes to top of the line retrievers.
