In Bossier City there are 9 fire stations and only 4 of them have ambulances. If there is an emergency medical call, a fire truck will most likely be the first one there. All BCFD firefighters are EMT's so they are trained to take care of medical emergencies. In the case of a cardiac emergency, stroke or trauma call, every minute matters.

Yeap, I made the unholy mistake of calling one of them a fireman the other day instead of a fire fighter. Guess it’s my mistake, didn’t realize they were that sensitive about it
now that's a job.
underpaid and overworked. some of these cats skydive in order to reach these fires.

many never make it home.

I know of multiple departments that were told just that.

For as much as "first responders" love to toot their own horn, they sure are risk averse.

The dept I work for in N LA is still responding to EMS calls but we are not making patient contact if we can help it. We do not run an ambulance service and run all EMS calls with a parish wide EMS system (it is not Acadian or med express this is run by the parish). If we do have a call where our unit gets there before EMS gets there, one person will dress out in gown, gloves, goggles, and mask and then go make patient contact. But, if we can avoid patient contact, our admin does not want us making any patient contact.

Do you have any interesting stories? Fire related or from EMS calls, either one.

Thats a fair question, but most of the time it is more cost effective to send a big fire truck. There is a minimum staffing on a fire truck and you would have to have additional staffing to support an SUV unit that would need a minimum of two people. The cost in salary for the additional 2 people is more than running a fire truck to the medical call.

Wait... what?

So the reason they send a fire truck instead of an SUV is that there would not be enough people left behind to man the fire truck, yet the entire fire truck with crew currently winds up on the EMS call anyway..?

Ive been a fireman nearly 20 years and never known anyone to care if you say fireman or firefighter. Hell we even get called ambulance drivers or as a medic people will call me or someone else emt. 99.999999% of us really don’t care.

Shreveport Fire made the case for Sprint vehicles a few yrs back, basically a Ford Expedition to make such calls. Now they take the sprint(s), the fire truck(S) and an ambulance.

Why do they call them Sprint vehicles?

Theoretically the smaller vehicle could move faster to scenes and minimize the use of the large trucks when they weren't needed.

This is likely already happening.
