“STOP! You need to stop talking to my daughter about her weight. She is 13, she is strong. She is healthy and she is PERFECT.” That’s what mom Julie Venn said when a nurse shamed her 13-year-old daughter Riley for gaining weight. In a post shared to the “Moms of Tweens and Teens” Facebook page, Venn describes the shocking incident, which took place at an annual checkup back in August.
The appointment started off as usual, with a physician’s assistant taking the 7th grader’s vitals and asking a few basic questions about her sleep, exercise (Riley plays both softball and basketball) and diet. But then, according to Venn, the nurse practitioner abruptly said, “Tell me RILEY, HOW CAN YOU EXPLAIN ALL OF THIS WEIGHT YOU’VE GAINED?”
While Riley, who had recently gone through a growth spurt like most teen girls do, was speechless (and even started to tear up), her mom, on the other hand, says she “LOST MY MIND.” After defending her daughter, Venn pulled the nurse aside to have a private discussion about what had been said.
From a reader:This week I took my 13 year old daughter to get her physical. As we entered the examination room I was… Posted by Moms of Tweens and Teens on Monday, August 27, 2018
“I explained in no uncertain terms that she was out of line in the way she dealt with my daughter,” Venn explains. “Our girls need to be empowered and supported and celebrated. They already have to compare themselves to the ridiculous social media bullshite standards.”
quote:
Venn ends her rant by asserting they will not return to that doctor’s office, and that she hopes other medical professionals learn from the pair’s experience. Claiming that shaming statements like the ones her daughter received are dangerous, Venn offers up what she thinks should have been said instead:
“Know that some girls gain weight, some lose weight, some struggle with acne, some feel insecure but remember this- YOU ARE PERFECT just the way you are. This is just the beginning of a long, confusing, sometimes scary road to becoming a woman but it is worth it!”

Kid looks pretty healthy to me. I was waiting for a picture of a super fat kid AND mom.

I think the mom has issues. Girl isn’t fat so why is the mom freaking out? The nurse was probably just making conversation.

Can't imagine why a medical professional might need to know why a patient experienced a significant change in weight since the previous visit. It's not as if that could possibly indicate a serious medical issue.

I’m guessing this is your wife and daughter? Not sure why else this matters.

I think the mother is the issue here, not the nurse.

Something doesn't make sense here. Did the girl look like that picture when the nurse saw her and made the stupid comment? Because, if so, that nurse is insane.
If the picture is exactly as the girl presented herself to the nurse, then I will say that it is obvious to every sane person that the girl is exceedingly healthy-looking and I defy anybody to find a picture of a more healthy-looking 13 year old girl.
Mom should have told nurse: "Nurse have you lost your mind cause I'll help you find it."

Exactly.
If her teacher or the clerk at WalMart asked her this, it would be different and definitely inappropriate. I don't think this is out of bounds as long as the nurse asked the question in a non-snarky way.
Sounds like Mom wanted to have her Facebook spotlight moment.

...that's a medical question, which makes sense seeing how she was there for a medical appointment

Sounds like a case of poor bedside manner, but doctors are here to discuss weight whether you like it or not.
Many diseases can manifest with weight gain and weight loss. Those diseases don't care about your fragile self-esteem.
