I work for a huge company & I can explain why Customer Service is dead & not coming back. 1. Companies do not want to pay decent money for Customer Service employees in America & have outsourced them to India & the rest of Asia 2. Americans for the most part do not want these jobs & can make the same money living off the government & not have to get screamed at all day by Totalitarian Karens. 3. AI, Chat, & technology are getting used more & more every day. Most people 30 & under are completely terrified by talking to anyone on the phone.
I think you missed the biggest one: companies would rather pay cheap labor and make you grind out a solution than just offering to make it right, because it’s more profitable. If it takes a hours for you to exchange a pair of $50 shoes, you will likely wind up keeping the shoes. All they had to do was develop and AI gatekeepers and pay someone overseas $4/hr to tell you they are sorry and they are escalating the issue and to not worry.

I can't recall the last time I took the time to listen to a voicemail on my personal cell phone.

If you don't get a response you like from any corporate customer service, hang up and call back. Chances are pretty good the next person tells you something completely different.

OP is spot on. Quality customer service is a point I’ve harped on my kids during their high school and college jobs. Learn how to provide exceptional customer service and you’ve got 99% of your competitors beat these days.

When I was a little kid I thought it was neat that some adults had pocket pagers . And there were pay phones everywhere.

I have lost faith in this world. Idiocracy is not coming, it is here. It is real. Any retail establishment I go to, the people are basically retarded. They can barely make a sentence. They don't understand anything and most of them look like zombies. Really, I leave about 60% of the retail establishments I go to now and move on to another and hope it is only slightly as bad. It is awful.
I hear about a living wage. These folks don't have the smarts or skills to even keep themselves alive. They must be relying on doordash for food. I know they can't gather it or cook it themselves.
Sorry for the rant, but it is alarming. I just can't see good things ahead for our country. No matter what we do. We are just too stupid as a whole.

I called Anthem the other day to ask a question on my vision plan. The automated message asked me if I was over 50, so I said yes, and it took me to a commercial trying to sell me a life alert device, and there was no option to escape and go back to talk to a representative.
I hate laws, but I do think health care providers and companies should be required to have people answer the phone.

For consumers, it has been that way for 20 years.
But if you were in a corporate office at your job and called the help desk for something on your computer, you had an internal help desk pick up the call and they were Americans in America.
In the last 5 years, that is also now offshored to a 3rd world country. Usually India.
I'm on a contract now working in a bunch of systems for a very large American healthcare conglomerate based in DC, and I have to deal with their help desk regularly. Help Desk is in Costa Rica.
My previous project was another large healthcare company (the largest on Earth). During my time there, they also outsourced all of their help desk to India. I'm not talking about the consumer helplines for customers you don't give a shite about, this is the help desk for your own employees who get IT problems and therefore can't do their job and therefore the company loses money, they still outsourced that shite to the benchods.

A customer service job is one of the worst jobs a person can have.

I called a healthcare provider recently and the lady facilitating payment was very helpful. Crazy how helpful and convenient a company can make customer service when it directly involves them being paid!
