How is it even possible to drink that much vodka? You can't funnel vodka, or chug it.

and no one forced him to funnel anything, unless they tied him down and propped his mouth open. he could have made the decision to walk away at any point.

His blood alcohol level was beyond anything I've ever seen. (For a reminder, Dwayne Haskins' BAC was around .024 when he was killed.)

his blood-alcohol content was found to be 0.486 percent

The frick does Dwayne Haskins have to do with this? Dude was killed by a car lol

Ben Wynne set the bar at .588 and although he died I haven’t seen any of these hazing cases reach that. One of the guys with Wynne who survived was in the .52s I think so .486 isn’t anything special.

There are multiple types of hazing.

Mentally screwing with someone is far more effective than beating the shite out of them, making them do scut work, or having them drink until they are in a fricking coma.

Our chapter president did what he did to make a point to the other chapter that what they were doing wasn’t effective for what they intended it to do.

Hazing in the sense of making pledges pull toward one another out of hatred of you or stress/frustration is useful and genuinely creates bonds that can be long lasting, similar to teammates in HS and in the same spirit (albeit admittedly less drastic) as military buddies.

But, it's counterproductive if the 18/19 yo going through it thinks you might have no regard for their life. When we were pledges, I don't think I once thought the folks making us do onerous stuff were completely unconcerned about our well being. Granted, I knew they were 22, often drunk and may not have my absolute best interests at heart, but they weren't totally callous with our lives. I was always able to tell the ones who screwed with us for good hearted sport, those who screwed with us for a purpose, and the small minority who did it because they were crappy people. And I like to think the people we did the same to felt similarly.

Most Greek life isn’t remotely close to this shite. Yeah there’s big arse parties especially at the bigger schools, but most frats don’t haze PNMs or pledges like this and some don’t really haze at all aside from random stupid shite.

The fact that greek life governance orgs at universities go out of their way to define hazing as including work not shared by full members, etc. tells you what you need to know about the motivations. For example, having pledges clean up after a party while everyone else doesn't have to. Which is the type of seniority-based privilege stuff that happens in every team, org, etc.

I'm not one who thinks fraternities are largely infallible, the opposite actually. Some are widely bad on certain campuses and on others they're largely productive and beneficial. But there is an effort to undermine and discredit greek life as a whole by the rare, rare exception, and it's worth questioning why that is.

That’s a pretty big question. First off there are certainly your shite frats that are completely your stereotypical douchey rich kid frat. And they’re usually the ones that are in the news for stuff like this. Rarely will you hear about any of the fundraising events they do or the work with the community they do. Also the biggest parties on campuses are almost always hosted by frats and since they have the biggest parties that means they’ll have the largest number of fricked up shite happening. Also the ban Greek life movement usually consists of people who rarely interacted with GL or only get their info from news and movies.

Truth is most GL is just normal college kids getting together to hang out and do normal college kids things. And of course there’s the whole making friends for life and potential business connections for later in life as networking is massive part of it as well

Dude apparently funneled a ton of beer and then drank a bottle of Vodka and nearly died after he essentially went into a coma and was resuscitated. He is now blind and brain damaged and can't walk or talk.

The student was resuscitated and placed on a ventilator after the hazing incident at the Phi Gamma Delta house, where he was a pledge, according to a February report in the Columbia Missourian.

Well, did he get in the frat or not? They left that part out

Seems like he proved his loyalty

Maybe parents should drink with their son until the boy gets drunk so that he can safely learn when it’s time to stop drinking. This shite just shouldn’t be happening.

My parents didn't drink around me. Aside from chugging everything in 30 minutes or less, which most rational people don't do their first time drinking, your body tells you you better quit.
