RIP in peace

quote:

The last remaining new car with an average transaction price of less than $20,000 in July was the Mitsubishi Mirage compact car, according to Cox Automotive.

quote:

Automakers have been spurning cheap — and almost exclusively small — cars for years, having discontinued models like the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus and Volkswagen Beetle.

Americans have moved on from passenger cars, embracing SUVs, crossovers and pickups — all of which are more expensive on average.

quote:

New-vehicle prices averaged $48,334 in July, according to Cox's Kelley Blue Book — and they haven't averaged less than $30,000 in well over a decade.

ITT: A bunch of people inadvertently posting the answer to the very common security question of “what was your first car”

And I thought the Sentra was cheaper. We had a thread on this a few months ago and was shocked that the mitsubishi wasn’t the cheapest car on sale today.

I know someone that bought a stock sentra for 13k in 2016. Just for computing to work. Short commute only has 65k miles on it. Turned out to be a great investment imo

I would be curious to see the median. The average is going to heavily skew up because the floor for a new car starts so high, while there’s functionally no ceiling.

I bought a mirage about 8 years ago, the thing got 45 MPG and had 97 horse power. Monthly payment was 109$. I drove it across the country and when we got to the rockies I had 18 wheelers passing me up the hills, pedal all the way on the floor.

Gee, maybe people aren't buying smaller more economical cars because the only gd choice they have is a fricking mirage. Offer more normal regularly priced cars and people will buy them.

You’d think there would be a solid market for that car but I guess 10 year car loan terms won out

People are badly overextending themselves

1990 Mirage. That little fricker could go 2 weeks on 10 gallons of gas.

The plan of a car-less society is moving forward nicely.

Not according to the WEF. The goal is you have no car at all.

Cars have been getting destroyed in sales numbers for decades at this point.

I just read that a Hyundai Accent starts around $11k, and can go up to $18k. I have never seen the inside of one but I know a guy that can fit his drum kit in the back of the Accent wagon.

This must be old data as they discontinued these as well since they were affordable
