Yeah, the overarching theme for Jackson's problems is "white people left and that's not fair". And since a lot of those white people still work in Jackson, it becomes "they use our city and keep the money for themselves".

And, there is some truth to that, I guess. I've already said I'm in favor of a toll.

Move away from MS to a better state then. It is a free country.

Yeah they are the worst. They can't even get new teachers.

I wish America would quit failing black Americans. Every single other group is getting what it needs from America except black Americans. We should really focus on the needs of black Americans so that they will be satisfied with America. As long as even one black American remains dissatisfied with America we have not done our part.

Well, I don't know much about the new superintendent, but the last guy we had was practically an all-star. He received national recognition for fixing Memphis's public schools.

He didn't get results, but who can? I don't know. He also wasn't liked because he called out the community for not making a proper home and education top priorities.

Was it white supremacists or was it the same group of folks that are in charge of the rest of Jackson?

I mean, that simply isn't true for a family that is poor as dirt.

I love how in the press conference they had this sob story

"What am I supposed to tell my child when she asks why can't she go to a better school?"

Yet they are the first to shoot down voucher systems or charter schools.

There is a triad of things that contribute to education.

School (includes teachers)
Parents
Student

A good student with good parents can overcome a shitty school
Good parents and a good school can push a shitty student through
A good school and a good student can overcome shitty parents

But if you have two or three shitty foundations (which most of Mississippi does), then it will be a failure of epic proportions.

Well, that seems to be a pretty big issue, but unrelated to the Constitution of Mississippi. Very much related to shitty parenting, though.

They don't have working plumbing, but they have 294 administrators in that district making more than $90k.

Not to mention about 5x the number of staff they need.

I have done some consulting work for every district in the metro. Clinton has about 12 people in their central office for 5000 students. I'd put Clinton as one of the best 3-4 districts in the state.

JPS has about 700 central office staff for 18,000 students. Rankin is about the same size and has half the staff, and as you said, they are one of the best. Madison is leaner on staff but only has about 13,000 students.

Get the right people in the right seat on the bus. The core message of Jim Collins' Good to Great.

At one time JPS had five "graphic designers" making 40k each. Someone has a cousin that knows Photoshop and he has a cousin that went to Hinds.

Hmm not so true. Unless you are a HCP and tied to the hospitals lots of businesses have moved out of Jackson (and the hospitals are trying to build North of town but running into issues as they "trip over each other and block each other's attempts). Run up Highland Colony and see for yourself. So basically the thrashing about by the political leaders of Jackson needs to turn inward to identify what they have done to chase off residential and commercial tax bases?

They need to do like the Coast: Tell the evangelicals to frick off. Build casinos, and use the tax revenue for the school system.

The leaders in Jackson are just going to bow to the poor constituents who want to place the blame on "the man". It's really sad.

Tony Yarber, though flawed, at least knew taxes in Jackson needed to be raised. But he was swallowed by his own.

My comment was really in the context of the MAEP. If it is underfunded from what was promised, then that needs to be rectified.

Solution to that is inact a tax for people living out of city limits, but working in the city.

Why is it that poor as dirt immigrants come to our country to sacrifice and scrap to put their families in a better position, but so many people already living in poverty here seem to have little upward mobility?

No what they need to do get introspective and identify what they have fricked up and fix it. Unfortunately that would force them to quit lining the pockets of individuals ("administrators" and "clergy" who have been given nice fat contracts to ensure their congregations vote as a block) and thus will never happen.
