Furthermore, they should've had VHF. Whether they had it correctly configured to transmit a digital distress signal is another story, but I would say that it's likely they did if they were island hopping the way they were.

I've asked the same questions. Regardless, they can't be contacted at this time. Hoping for a miracle, I don't know who else could be contacted on USVI's. They were supposed to go to St John and return on Thursday.

Both. You can take them off the boat into a liferaft with you and activate it. It will show up as blips on a radar out to 10 miles.
Pretty sure EPIRB sends a signal to a satellite network. In that sense, range is basically unlimited if you're in the hemisphere it was intended to be used in.
I know that's how my handheld PLB works.

Yes he has a radio, he's a charter captain.

Yea definitely. It's worldwide on satellites
I was mainly referring to how someone in the area can see them stranded whether it be a boat or a plane.
Yea I wasn't very descriptive

Just sent you contact info for a guy that might be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction.

Got it, passed it on. Thanks

So baw is sailing around during major hurricanes? I'm confused

Just saw this on the news.
They said the uscg and fbi are investigating

The boat is his livelihood. He's always sailed out of the way of the storm and returned. For Irma he sailed south about 70 miles and returned after she passed

Not good.
Hope they somehow made it to land somewhere.
The older I get, the more respect I have for open (&/or deep) water.

I agree. Hopefully the EPIRB not going off means they're ok, but can't communicate with anyone. They were supposed to be back on Thursday
Posted on 9/26/17 at 10:16 pm to LSU Tigershark
I know St. John has had communication issues, but my understanding is there are means of getting into contact with others (internet, sat phones, etc.)
Prayers for the best!

Will keep them in my thoughts brah. Scary situation all around and I hope for a positive outcome.
Would seem after this long, the result will be grim though. Not sure why everyone is shitting on Django - this operation has no doubt gone from rescue to recovery after so much time has passed.

I would have to think they would manually deploy epirb at first sign of real danger. That's what I would do.

And about the coast guard. They are strict about these things. They aren't just going to launch planes, choppers, and boats for heresay.
2nd this. Fishing near the ocean we listen to radio chatter. A boat was reported down but the CG spent 20 min trying to verify because the report was sketchy. Turns out, a boat didn't go down. They were asking anyone in the area to verify.

Did he have an HF radio?
Doesn't appear to have a license.

It doesn't make any sense that the coast guard can't fly over the area to see if the boat is stranded near St John
Clearly, coast guard assets in and around Puerto Rico have nothing fricking else to be doing right now.
There is a severe lack of understanding of actual assets available in relation to the distressed population trying to get out. AKA... this is simply not a priority for them at the moment with the sheer volume and resources that would be required to find this boat.

Agree with this. It's sad to say, but given current situation and the fact no epirb or SOS broadcast, I can see how they wouldn't want to divert resources right now
