A lot of people really underestimate just how big and wide open the oceans are if they don't have a lot of experience being out there. They know the ocean is big, but it's hard to really quantify it in your head.
The open seas are dark and full of terror.

He's an experienced boat captain and has sailed away from storms before. I don't know how the weather was, but it sounds like seas were rough

How far of a distance is that? You said they made it half way and then had trouble with one engine? How fast can a cat like that go on one engine? 3-4 mph I'd think? Even if one motor went out, could they not sail? There had to be decent winds at least with a storm a brewing right?
I would think it's most likely they made it, and just are unable to contact someone because of the communication issues down there? Or does the island they went to have full communication working?

St Croix to St John is maybe 45 miles
St John has very little communications due to getting wiped out by Irma

I agree, especially since one of the motors was having trouble 5 miles out, but that boat is also his house and his livelihood.

That was my thought as well. I realize people move boats so they're not damaged in harbor but with a bad motor who knows.... So many other factors that are possible it's hard to guess what happened or lay blame.

The good thing is that it sounds like they are still finding people a week later. Lack of communications is making it very difficult

That's what I'm hoping for too. They're safe and hanging out somewhere but can't communicate yet.

What's needed is a true location at a specific time. Then with currents and wind directions, there is a much better chance of finding where they are now.

After Katrina, friends were able to check Mississippi Gulf Coast by satellite, several days before anyone was allowed in.

My gut is that they made it.
However, that's not certain, because I'm sure they've tried to get a word out. Even with "little" communication, a week is a long time to be silent.
I would be cautiously optimistic until this drags on a little longer or you get negative reports.

Ugh, I hate to see this. Communication is crucial when you're out on the water like that, you can't rely solely on cell coverage or radio. You have to have two or three backups. I know it has no effect on this story, but hopefully someone learns from it and avoids catastrophe in the future.

I would be contacting my congress critter senator peson in an emergency type of way to see if they can help.
