After Katrina, friends were able to check Mississippi Gulf Coast by satellite, several days before anyone was allowed in.
The only problem is that what NOAA typically makes available to the public is limited to the coastline and areas impacted rather than open ocean. The link below has the most updated NOAA imagery (publicly available) as of this morning which does include some of the harbors of St John. I'm not sure the resolution is high enough to pick out that particular vessel - assuming they made it to a harbor there - but given the limited imagery it shouldn't take very long to scan through it.
Hopefully they're just without communication.

Yeah I found that last night, but hardly any area of water is visible. Does anyone have access to the open water?

How far does an AT&T cell tower have transmission to a cell phone?

Do you have a chart of the islands they were sailing between? Do you have friends who know basic seamanship and piloting? If not, there may be members of a Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary you could enlist to help you. there are Power Squadrons in New Orleans, Slidell, Mobile, and maybe in Baton Rouge.
Create a chart of the area. On it, there are two variables: the cat with a mast and the cat dismasted. Place that cat as close as you can to where they were at last known position. Figure out the windage and which direction, and at what speed either would be moved. And how much movement per day. Did they have a drogue? A drogue is a cone shaped "sail" you trail after your boat IN the water to slow the boat's speed.
Good luck

The coast guard is involved now. Trying to determine the last location based on cell phone ping, which was late night on 9/19. I don't know how close they had to be to a cell tower

The Power Squadron does not have an active squadron in St. Croix anymore. There may still be one in St. Thomas, but I know there are several in Puerto Rico.
I'll see if I still have any of the contact info for the members that were in the St. Croix Squadron.

Right about halfway between the islands you lose cell service for a few minutes, but that is only if all the antenna's are up and working.

People who have taken the Power Squadron Education series can draw charts, ,plot movement, allow for windage, currents, etc. I never suggested sending them on a search, but rather use their knowledge of piloting and navigation.
The local knowledge of the guys who are down there can be invaluable, as well.

Sorry to hear....sad story....
Just curious, I'm an avid saltwater fisherman......why would they move out to save boat the day before?..no way I would have sailed that late not unless I had the island between me and the storm and my sail was less than a day and eothout emergency communications? ..that easily spells horrid conditions and bad situations on the water especially with swells and huge waves and the storm bearing down....?
